CSUB Drops Midweek to Cal Poly

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield got solid performances from Isaiah Moten and Roman Angelo on the mound, but the Roadrunner offense couldn't get on track on Tuesday night as Cal Poly won 2-0 at Baggett Stadium.

Moten (0-1) was the hard-luck loser on Tuesday after he gave up just one run in five innings of work.  The senior allowed just three hits, but it was a pair of walks in the fifth that came back to haunt the CSUB starter.  With two outs, Moten walked back-to-back batters and a single by Elijah Greene made it 1-0 in favor of the home team.

The Mustangs used some more two-out magic in the sixth after Angelo struck out the first two batters he faced.  Nick DiCarlo doubled and Conagher Sands singled to bring him home to close the scoring on the night.

The Roadrunners appeared to take a 1-0 lead in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Cole Valletta, but the Mustangs appealed.  The umpires ruled that Will Picketts left the third base bag before the Cal Poly right fielder caught the ball, and he was declared out for an inning-ending double play.

CSUB was in business again in the sixth inning after Tyler Jorgensen walked and Daniel Carrizosa was hit by a pitch.  Andrew Alvarez struck out Noah Barba for the first out in the inning and Will Picketts looked to hit into a fielder's choice after the left fielder dropped the ball and the shortstop threw to third for the force play.  However, the umpires met again and decided the infield fly rule was called and Jorgensen was ruled out for another odd inning-ending double play.

The `Runners mustered just three hits on the night.  Ryan Koch doubled with one out in the ninth, but was doubled off on a lineout by Sergio Robles to end the game.  Jake Ortega worked a pair of walks to aid the Roadrunner effort.

CSUB returns home for a four-game series with Santa Clara.  The series opener will be Friday at 6:00 p.m.
