Roadrunners Drop Series Opener to Santa Clara

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. Darius Vines, Graham Kuck and Davonte Butler pitched well in Friday night's series opener for the CSU Bakersfield baseball team, but a Ryan Koch solo home run was all the offense could come up with as Santa Clara defeated the Roadrunners 3-1 at Hardt Field.

Vines (1-1) was saddled with the loss despite striking out 10 batters in just six innings pitched.  It was the first time a CSUB pitcher had 10 strikeouts since Max Carter had 11 against Portland on February 23, 2017.

The Broncos did all of their damage against the CSUB starter and hit two solo home runs off of the junior righty.  After three starts, Vines has compiled a 3.00 ERA with 26 strikeouts in just 18 innings pitched.

Kuck struck out four and walked two and didn't give up a hit to the Broncos in two innings of work.  Butler allowed a walk and a hit in the ninth but got out of the inning unscathed.  As a team, the Roadrunners struck out a season-high 14 batters.

Offensively, a Ryan Koch home run in the bottom of the eighth was all the scoring for the home team.  The senior designated hitter also slugged his fourth double of the season.  Fellow senior Jake Ortega continued to swing a hot bat as well as he added two more hits to raise his average to .381.  The pair combined for four of CSUB's six hits.

Tyler Jorgensen added a double to the center field wall and Noah Baraba added a base hit from the leadoff spot.  The `Runners had plenty of opportunities on the evening but left nine men on base in the loss.

Keegan McCarville (2-1) picked up his second win of the season after throwing six shutout innings for the visitors.  Ethan Heinrich added his second save after he allowed just a walk in the ninth.

CSUB (2-8) and Santa Clara (3-5) will meet twice tomorrow at Hardt Field.  The doubleheader will begin at 2:00 p.m.
