Roadrunners Drop Opener to Dons

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield baseball team got a tremendous start from junior Darius Vines, but couldn't provide him with any run support as the University of San Francisco beat the Roadrunners 2-0 on Friday afternoon.

Vines chucked six shutout innings to keep the score tied while he was still in the game.  The junior struck out nine batters and allowed just three hits.  It was the second straight quality start for Vines as he threw six innings against Cal to get the victory on opening day.  He has just a 2.25 ERA and has struck out 16 batters so far this year.

The Dons scored their only two runs off of Vines' replacement, Graham Kuck.  Kuck got a strikeout to start the inning, but hit a batter and error by Will Picketts put two men aboard for Jack Winkler, who singled to make the score 1-0.  Beard then turned to Davonte Butler, but before the sophomore could get out of the inning, USF tacked on another run via a fielder's choice to make it 2-0.

Riley Ornido (1-1) was just as good as Vines in the Dons' home opener.  The sophomore threw seven shutout innings, struck out 10 and allowed just three hits.  Joey Steele picked up his second save of the season, tossing the final two innings and facing the minimum.

On two occasions, CSUB had a runner in scoring position with just one out, but Ornido was able to keep the `Runner offense at bay on both occasions.  Tyler Jorgensen, Jesse Rowley and Daniel Carrizosa all singled for CSUB, but for the second straight game the offense was held to three hits.

The Roadrunners will look to bounce back on Saturday when Ethan Skuija (0-1) takes the hill at 1:00 p.m. in San Francisco.
