Mustangs Down CSUB on Opening Night

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – On a chilly night at Hardt Field, the CSU Bakersfield bats couldn't heat up on Tuesday as the Roadrunners lost their home opener to Cal Poly 7-1. 

Freshman Roman Angelo was the bright spot on the evening.  Angelo tossed four scoreless innings, struck out a pair of batters and allowed just two hits.  Trailing 3-0 when he entered the game, Angelo kept the Roadrunners within striking distance until he was relieved in the eighth inning. 

Sophomore starter Davonte Butler (0-2) struggled through 2.1 innings.  Butler walked three and gave up two earned runs in the third inning.  His replacement Kevin Altamirano got just one out and walked three before giving way to Andrew Ciandro.  Ciandro got the final out of the third inning, but didn't record an out in the fourth before CSUB Head Coach Jeremy Beard called on the big freshman. 

Offensively, the Roadrunners managed just three hits and one unearned run on the evening.  Sergio Robles, Nick Grossman and Tyler Jorgensen all had singles for the CSUB lineup. 

CSUB finally got on the board in the bottom of the ninth.  Will Picketts started the inning with a walk, Jesse Rowley reached on an error and both baserunners advanced 90 feet on a groundout by Cole Valletta.  Noah Barba walked to load the bases and Picketts was able to trot home on a wild pitch. 

CSUB (2-3) will look to bounce back this weekend when they head to the University of San Francisco for a three-game set.  The series begins on Friday at 2:00 p.m.
