`Runners Fall Short Against Army in Extras

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – Down to its final three outs in the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings, the CSU Bakersfield softball team was able to rally twice, but ultimately fell to Army West Point, 4-3. While the Roadrunners came up just short in the extra-inning clash, CSUB (4-3) still came out of the weekend with a winning record as its strong start to the 2019 season continues.

CSUB 3, Army West Point 4 (9 inn.)

Despite retiring five of the first six batter she faced including three strikeouts, CSUB starting pitcher Julie Lewis found herself trailing 1-0 in the top of the second inning. A hit batter ended up at second base thanks to a wild pitch before Army's Bianca Gonzalez drove in the run with an RBI single.

The Black Knights threatened again in the top of the fifth, loading the bases with only one out against CSUB reliever Kiara Azevedo. The freshman from Los Banos, Calif. returned a comebacker to home for the second out of the frame before getting Army to ground out to end the threat.

In the bottom of the sixth, senior Nicole Curry got the `Runners rolling with a one-out single. Her pinch runner, Nakaila Fuggs, moved into scoring position on a passed ball. Once again, Army's Jolie Duong got her team out of trouble, recording back-to-back outs to strand Fuggs at second and keep the Black Knights ahead 1-0.

With Bakersfield down to its final out, shortstop Cydney Curran sent a double down the right field line to keep the `Runners alive. Head Coach Crissy Buck-Ziegler made a call to the dugout, sending sophomore Ariana Acedo to the plate for a pinch-hit opportunity. The Tucson, Ariz. native made the most of it, blasting a double to center field that brought Curran home and tied the game at one run apiece, sending the `Runners into extra innings for the first time this season.

With the international tiebreaker rule in effect, Army was able to plate a pair of runs in the top of the eighth inning. In the bottom half of the frame, Paige Johnson was placed at second base and came around to score on an RBI single by Kayla Tadewosian. The freshman wound up on third thanks to a two-base error and Makayla Lopez delivered a sacrifice fly ball to tie the score at 3-3.

In the ninth inning, Army moved the placed runner to third on a sac bunt and Ally Snelling hit a two-out RBI single to put the Black Knights back in the lead, 4-3. In the bottom half, redshirt freshman Katie Jackson wound up on third base after catcher Karah Wiseman laid down a sacrifice bunt to start the bottom of the ninth. A strikeout found CSUB down to its final out again and Duong got a fly ball to clinch the win.

Freshman Ally Miller and Curran both tallied a pair of hits for the `Runners on Sunday. Tadewosian, the designated player, went 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI. Lewis pitched four innings while scattering two hits and no walks for CSUB. Azevedo took the loss to fall to 3-2 on the year despite allowing zero earned runs in five innings of work.

CSUB vs. CSUN

With each of the first three games of the Early Bird Classic going long on Sunday, CSUB and CSUN were unable to get their game going due to lack of daylight. The two teams, coached by Buck-Ziegler and Tairia Flowers, former teammates at UCLA, will work to reschedule the game for some time down the road.

Next Weekend

CSUB has wrapped up the Early Bird Classic, but will return to action next weekend in a return to Northern California. The `Runners are scheduled to take on the Silicon Valley Classic, co-hosted by Santa Clara and San José State, Feb. 22-24. Bakersfield will take on five different opponents including pair of hosts, Utah State, Ball State, and Montana.
