`Runners Rally in Seventh for Win Over Bearcats

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – For the second time this season, the CSU Bakersfield softball team rallied for a huge seventh inning to earn a come-from-behind victory. Down to their final three outs on Saturday at Matador Diamond, the Roadrunners scored six runs to defeat Binghamton, the team that had opened the Early Bird Classic with victories over both CSUB and tournament host CSUN.

"Once gain it was a great team win," said Crissy Buck-Ziegler, Head Coach at CSUB. "Daryn Hitzel threw a solid ballgame. We kept fighting and Arianna Felix had a clutch single to drive in two. We are working on mental toughness and we caught pitch to pitch."

For the second-straight game, the `Runners struck first with CSUB taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Batting in the second spot, senior Paige Johnson got the Bakersfield offense rolling with a double down the left field line. Freshman Kayla Tadewosian followed that with a double to the gap, plating Johnson for Tadewosian's first collegiate RBI.

In the bottom half of the first inning, Binghamton capitalized on a throwing error that allowed the leadoff batter to reach second base. Despite a groundout RBI scoring the tying run, Hitzel, making her first start in the circle this season, went on to fan the final Bearcat to get out of the inning. BU scored another unearned run off Makayla Alvarez's RBI single in the bottom of the second, taking a 2-1 lead on the `Runners. The Bearcats tacked on another run in the bottom of the third to go up 3-1 on CSUB.

The `Runners finally answered back with a tally mark in the top of the sixth to pull within one run. Junior Makayla Lopez led the frame off with a single and her pinch runner, Chris Hipa, was able to go from first to third on Nadia Amezcua's bunt single. Sophomore Ariana Acedo pitch hit and delivered a sacrifice fly ball to make the score 3-2.

After Binghamton plated another run in the bottom half of the sixth, the `Runners came to bat down to their final three outs and needing at least a pair of runs. Johnson, Bakersfield's starting third baseman, got the seventh-inning rally started with a leadoff triple and was promptly plated on Tadewosian's second RBI base hit of the game.

Back-to-back walks loaded the bases for catcher Karah Wiseman, who earned an RBI with a walk of her own from an eight-pitch battle. After a pitching change, Felix, the starting right fielder, got a two-RBI single and an error allowed a third run to score, putting the `Runners ahead 7-4. An RBI groundout by Cydney Curran capped CSUB's six-run rally as the `Runners earned an 8-4 advantage.

Hitzel came back out in the bottom of the seventh and finished off the fourth complete game of her young career. The sophomore from Coronoa, Calif. allowed just two earned runs while scattering six hits and fanning four Bearcats. Tadewosian went 2-for-4 from the plate and tallied two RBI in the game. Felix went 1-for-2 while also driving in a pair of runs on Saturday.

Senior Nicole Curry reached base twice on a pair of walks while Wiseman added a pair of walks herself and was 1-for-2 from the plate. Johnson and Curran joined Tadewosian with two hits each against Binghamton.

The `Runners (4-2) wrapped up Day 2 of competition at the CSUN Early Bird Classic but will return on Sunday for two more games. CSUB will take on Army at 12:30 p.m. before closing out the weekend against tournament host CSUN at 2:45 p.m. Live stats will be available for both games while a live audio broadcast is scheduled during the game against CSUN.
