CSUB Defeats Cal on Opening Day

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – For the first time in school history, the CSU Bakersfield baseball team defeated the Cal Bears.  The Roadrunners used a three-run inning fourth and great pitching performances by Darius Vines, Graham Kuck and Edgar Barclay to earn the split on the day.  Prior to the Cal game, CSUB dropped the season opener to Pepperdine 11-0.

"In between games the focus was really to stay with each other," said CSUB Head Coach Jeremy Beard.  "Lets not panic.  It was a tough first game against a pretty good team.  We had to stick with the process and take the good with the bad.  In the second game, we calmed down a bit and had a much better dugout presence and Darius (Vines) and the pitching staff did an outstanding job."

With Cal leading 2-0 after three innings, the Roadrunner offense came to life.  Eric Charles was hit by a pitch to start the inning and three straight singles by Tyler Jorgensen, Jesse Rowley and Ryan Koch tied the score at 2-2.  Rowley eventually scored on a wild pitch to give CSUB a 3-2 advantage.

The Bears responded immediately with a home run in the bottom of the inning to knot the score, but the `Runners reclaimed the lead in the top fifth as freshman Angel Saldivar scored on what should've been a RBI groundout by Charles, but was booted by the Cal second baseman.  Saldivar led off the inning with his first career hit.

After giving up the solo shot in the fourth, Vines (1-0) kicked it into high gear and retired the final nine batters he faced.  He put an exclamation point on his six inning performance by striking out the side in his final inning.

"I didn't want to come out, but I trust these guys," said Vines.  "I know they'll be ready to go when their number is called.  I had to show a little emotion just to get these guys going.  In the first game, we had some jitters, but we came out this next game and showed who we really were."

Vines gave way to Graham Kuck who pitched 1.1 innings before passing the baton to Edgar Barclay.  Barclay entered the game with one out and a runner on first in the eighth and walked his first batter on four pitches.  The junior didn't give in, however, and got a strikeout and a flyout to end the threat.  He picked up the save in the ninth as he allowed just a one-out walk to Golden Spikes Award Winner Andrew Vaughn before slamming the door shut.

Entering the game, CSUB was 0-5 against Cal and was swept by the Bears in Berkeley last spring.

Pepperdine 11, CSUB 0
It was a tough start to the year for the Roadrunners as the Waves jumped out to an 8-0 lead after just two innings.  CSUB starter Ethan Skuija (0-1) lasted just 1.1 innings against the Waves after giving up all eight runs.  Just two of Skuija's runs were earned, and a Charlie Welch grand slam in the top of the first inning blew the game open.

Sophomore Andrew Ciandro came on in relief of the `Runner starter and was spectacular, allowing just one hit in 3.2 innings.  In his CSUB debut, Roman Angelo retired the first six batters he faced before allowing three runs in the eighth inning.  Mario Lopez got CSUB out of the eighth and Isaiah Moten navigated a scoreless ninth.

The CSUB offense left nine runners on base over the course of the first game.  The Roadrunners had a golden opportunity for a big inning in the seventh, but with the bases loaded and one out, Dane Morrow got back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning.

Damian Henderson had a double to lead the offense, while Jesse Rowley, Ryan Koch, Will Picketts and Daniel Carrizosa all had base hits.

CSUB (1-1) will be back on the diamond tomorrow afternoon when they take on Ball State at 2:30 p.m. MST.
