Rogic Surges to 18th in 100 Backstroke

Popham, D'Arcy Approach Personal Bests for CSUB Women

Bakersfield, Calif. – Junior Kris Rogic swam just off his personal best time, posting a 56.23 to finish 18th in the 100m backstroke on day three of the 2019 Toyota US Open. Rogic's time highlighted another successful day in the pool for the Roadrunners as they continued competition against the country's best swimmers at Georgia Tech's McAuley Aquatic Center.

"Kris had a great performance," said CSUB Director of Swimming Chris Hansen. "He had to face some adversity and he had to endure a long day, but he still swam a great race when he needed to and got a great result in the finals."

Rogic raced out of the blocks in his preliminary swim, clocking the sixth-fastest 50m split in the field (26.73) and finishing in 56.70. The junior from Zagreb, Croatia, finished in a dead heat with Hawaii's Kane Follows and needed to win a swim off just to make the finals.

Rogic posted a tie-breaking time of 56.81 to beat his future Big West rival, despite having to swim the event for the second time in less than an hour.

Rogic's final swim was his third of the day and came almost 12 hours after his first. He will face a quick turnaround tomorrow, as he is scheduled to swim in the preliminaries of the 200m backstroke around 8 a.m. local time (5 a.m. PT). He didn't get out of the pool today until around 10 p.m. local time (7 p.m. PT).

After swimming three events yesterday, freshman Mikayla Popham competed in just the 200m freestyle on Friday and clocked a time of 2:04.76 in the event. She will complete a busy US Open schedule by swimming the 100m freestyle tomorrow.

"I'm really proud of Mikayla and the way she swam today," said Hansen. "No one at CSUB has ever been faster in the 200m free and for her to put up that time after such a busy schedule the last few weeks is really impressive."

In the women's 100m butterfly, sophomore Autumn D'Arcy turned in a preliminary time of 1:01.66 finishing 52nd and narrowly missing out on a finals swim of her own.

Loren Gillilan finished his preliminary heat in the Men's 100m butterfly in a time of 56.19. He'll look to build on today's performance in tomorrow's 200m butterfly competition.

"This meet has been a great experience for Autumn and Loren," Hansen added. "We want to give them as many long-course swims as we can heading into Olympic Trials and they're improving with every opportunity."

Junior Ryan Brimer added a time of 1:56.32 in the Men's 200m freestyle. Brimer's first two splits were among the fastest in the field as he touched the wall in 25.85 and 54.81 at the 50m and 100m marks, respectively. He'll put his sprint speed to the test in tomorrow's 100m freestyle competition.

Sophomore Antonio Milin posted a 1:07.24 in the Men's 100m breaststroke in his second swim of the weekend. He'll wrap up his US Open outing with the 200m breaststroke on Saturday.
