Roadrunners Round Out 2019 Against San Jose State

Bakersfield, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield women's swimming and diving team returns home on New Year's Eve and will wrap up the first half of the season with a dual meet against visiting San Jose State University. Bakersfield won last year's meeting with the Spartans by a score of 153-147 and enters the match-up with a record of 2-2 in dual meets this season. SJSU is 0-1 following a loss to Cal on Dec. 21.

"San Jose State is a better team this season, but so are we," said CSUB Director of Swimming Chris Hansen. "We need to swim hungry for results. Not just for wins but for second-, third- and fourth-place finishes as well."

The `Runners won nine events in last year's meet, but edged the Spartan's largely based on the depth of their swims. CSUB earned second-place finishes in 10 of the 14 swimming events.

Jayssie Haynes won the 200 IM, the 200 Freestyle and the 200 Breaststroke in last year's match-up with SJSU. She posted two podium finishes in CSUB's last meet at Fresno State on Dec. 14.

Autumn D'Arcy enters this weekend's match-up on a bit of a roll with 14 individual wins to her credit already this season. The sophomore swept all three of her events in the Fresno State dual meet and earned her third WAC Swimmer of the Week nod of the 2019-20 campaign. In last season's meet with the Spartan's she won both the 100 Fly and the 100 Freestyle.

Mikayla Popham will compete for the first time against SJSU. The freshman has won at least one individual event in three of Bakersfield's four dual meets to date. She was victorious in the 200 Freestyle at Fresno State.

"Jayssie, Autumn and Mikayla will be critical, as they always are," said Hansen. "But we will need everyone to step up in order to get a win this weekend."

Bakersfield will also look for strong performances from Tabea Mose, Ariane Skeggs and Maddie Cosgrove. The trio combined for six scoring swims against Fresno State. Mose finished second in the 100 Backstroke, while Cosgrove was the runner-up in the 200 Fly and Skeggs added third-place finishes in both the 500 Freestyle and the 1000 Freestyle.

Junior Bella Magalong also posted an individual victory against the Spartans last year, capturing the 100 Breaststroke in a time of 1:08.09. Magalong, along with freshman Lindsey Sohoel-Smith, should be in the mix for breaststroke points again this weekend.

The two clubs will share the pool for the third time this season. Bakersfield hosted San Jose State as part of both the CSUB Sprint Classic and the Roadrunner Invitational. In each event, the `Runners placed second, while the Spartans finished fourth.

Saturday's meet will begin at 10:30 a.m., at the John S. Hillman Aquatic Center.
