`Runner Men Post Strong Showing to Open USC Diving Meet

LOS ANGELES – The first day of the Trojan Diving Invite has concluded and freshman Sam Stinson led CSU Bakersfield with a strong performance. The Roadrunners faced off against a strong field of divers including student-athletes from USC, UCLA, Cal, Utah, UNLV, Cal Poly, Fresno State, and California Baptist on Friday.

"There is a lot of great competition at this invite, which is a great experience for all my divers", said Melissa Gore, Bakersfield's Diving Coach. "I am excited to see what happens over the next two days."

The `Runner men got the meet started on Friday with the 3-meter board. Stinson, a native of Damascus, Ore., placed eighth overall with a two-round total of 490.90 points. After a solid showing in the prelims, the freshman posted his best six-dive score of the day in the finals with 247.80 points.

Sophomore Nathan Cummins came out of the gate strong, posting a solid mark of 260.05 points to rank seventh after the prelims. Cummins' finals total of 477.90 placed him 11th on the day while junior Adam Estrella finished two spots back with 453.50 points.

As a team, the `Runner men tied for third of eight teams after the first day of competition.

Bakersfield's women kicked off USC's meet with the 1-meter board in Los Angeles. In a stacked field of 38 divers, the `Runners were unable to earn one of the Top 18 spots and advance to the finals. Sophomore Lauren Carson posted the best score of the day for CSUB's women with 163.55 points in the prelims.

The `Runner men will have the day off on Saturday, but the women will be right back in the pool for another day of competition. CSUB's women will tackle the 3-meter board tomorrow before Bakersfield's men close out the meet on Sunday with the 1-meter competition.
