Goldsmith's Late Goal Sends CSUB Past UNLV

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – A pair of athletic, first-half saves from goalkeeper Detre Bell and an 84th-minute goal from senior Ryan Goldsmith was enough to push CSU Bakersfield's men's soccer team past UNLV on Thursday afternoon. In front of a crowd of 1,244 people on Education Day, the Roadrunners earned a 1-0, Western Athletic Conference victory in their league home opener at the Main Soccer Field.

Bell, a redshirt junior from Hamilton, Bermuda, came up huge twice in the first half for the `Runners. The Bakersfield goalkeeper made an instinctive, leaping save on a deflected ball in the 11th minute before coming up clutch in the 40th minute. UNLV earned a penalty kick on a foul in the box, but Bell read the approach, dove to his left, and managed to deflect the PK with his outstretched fingers, keeping the match scoreless through halftime.

In the second half, the two teams continued to trade possession and shots evenly, but neither was able to breakthrough until the final 10 minutes. Junior Ricardo Soza corralled the ball in the box in the 84th minute and was quickly surrounded by UNLV defenders. The midfielder made a smart choice to pass out of the box, finding a wide-open Goldsmith at the top of the 18-yard box. Goldsmith took one small touch toward the middle of the field and fired with his left foot, curling the ball over the keeper and into the corner of the goal for a 1-0 lead.

UNLV looked for the equalizer in the final six minutes of the match, but every prod toward the CSUB half was quickly pushed back out. CSUB held on for its second win of the season, a much-needed bit of momentum after the team had suffered six losses on the year, all by just one goal.

CSUB (2-6, 1-1 WAC) will look to keep the momentum rolling with one home match remaining this weekend as Grand Canyon is set to come to town on Sunday. The `Runners and Lopes are scheduled to kick off Sunday's match at 6 p.m. on the Main Soccer Field.
