Rivera, `Runners to Begin Season at Minnesota, NDSU



BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The 2019-20 CSU Bakersfield wrestling season has officially arrived and the Roadrunners will jump right into action with a pair of tough road battles to open the year. On Friday, Nov. 1, the `Runners are scheduled to take on Minnesota, which finished Top 10 at the NCAA Championships last season. To close out the weekend, CSUB will tackle North Dakota State, a squad that sent four men to NCAAs a year ago.

"I look forward to testing our team early this season," Rivera said. "Our performances against Minnesota and North Dakota State will be great measurements as to where we stack up nationally. I expect our team to go out and fight as hard as they can for the entire dual."

Series History – Minnesota

Friday's season-opener marks the 11th time the `Runners and Golden Gophers have met in the all-time series, which dates back to 1987. The two teams have not met since Dec. 11, 2010, when Minnesota came to Bakersfield and earned a 26-6 victory.

The Gophers entered the 2019-20 season ranked No. 7 in the Preseason poll by the NCWA. At the 2019 NCAA Championships, Minnesota finished Top 10 as a team, enjoying four Gophers earn All-American honors. Two of those All-Americans, Mitch McKee and Devin Skatzka, returned to the Gopher lineup in 2019-20.

Series History – North Dakota State

 The series between Bakersfield and NDSU also began in 1987, but the two programs have met just four times since then. The `Runners took a pair of victories in the 80s, but the Bison have won the only two other meetings, both of which happened this decade. In 2014, NDSU won 27-12 in Bakersfield before earning a home victory in 2017, 32-8.

NSDU had four Bison qualify for the NCAA Championships last season, three of whom have returned: Andrew Fogarty, Cam Sykora, and a familiar face in former `Runner Lorenzo De La Riva. In the preseason TrackWrestling rankings, NDSU landed four student-athletes in the Top 30 at their respective weight classes.

Rivera's Return

CSUB Head Coach Manny Rivera will be making a return to a familiar place when he takes his `Runners to Minnesota. A three-time NCAA qualifier with the Gophers, Rivera is very familiar with the Minnesota program. He said he is excited to both see and compete against old friends this week.

Rohlfing Opens Season Ranked by InterMat

After a solid 2018-19 season in which he went 18-13 overall and 2-2 at the NCAA Championships, Russell Rohlfing was ranked No. 18 in the country at 149 by InterMat. Already a three-time NCAA qualifier, Rohlfing has the opportunity to join an elite group of Roadrunners if he can qualify for the Championships one last time as a redshirt senior. If he does, the native of La Habra Heights, Calif. will become just the sixth `Runner in CSUB's storied history to qualify all four years.
