Fast Times Highlight CSUB Sprint Classic



BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield's swimming teams kicked off their home schedule with an afternoon of sprint action on Friday. The Roadrunners hosted the CSUB Sprint Classic at the Hillman Aquatic Center while both the men's and women's squads finished second of five teams.

"Sometimes when you have such a high in the very beginning of the season," said Chris Hansen, CSUB's Director of Swimming, "then the hard work comes and you get tired and break down. We're not sure how they will handle it, but I have been pleasantly surprised!"

Men

Hansen highlighted the top performers for Bakersfield's men: "Kris Rogic won the 50 back and his leadoff in the 800 free relay is bigger than I ever expected. He's definitely going to be first in the WAC with that time." Hansen went on to say that Rogic's mark is the lowest dual-meet time for a `Runner since Bakersfield's last All-American, Mitchell Huxhold.

In the 50 back, Rogic out-touched UCSB's Jolen Griffin by three hundredths of a second with a winning time of 23.42. Leading off the 800 free relay team, the junior swam his leg in 1:39.18 while guiding the `Runner men to a time of 6:44.26, best in the field by almost a second and a half.

Hansen continued on to discuss the relay team's success: "Kris, Linus Richter, Loren Gillilan, and Ryan Brimer really swam a good in-season time for us. It's good to see people like Linus step up and want that fourth spot. It's a wide open spot right now and Linus made a pretty big jump today after not making the conference team last year."

Gillilan also posted a time of 22.02 in the 50 fly, earning CSUB's second individual victory of the Sprint Classic.

Women

"Jayssie Haynes won the 400 IM and Autumn D'Arcy won the 50 fly," Hansen said of his top female performers. "Those were our biggest swims, but everywhere I look, I keep seeing Maya Valdoria's name popping up. She's winning her heats and doing so well; this is her year for sure. I'm pretty pumped. As a whole, I'm excited for our women's team."

In the 400 IM, Haynes swam a season-best 4:27.73 to win the event. Freshman Mikayla Popham was just a couple seconds behind at 4:30.97 to place fourth. Popham, a native of Sunshine Coast, Australia, also swam a strong leadoff time of 1:52.67 in the 800 free relay, impressing her coach on Friday.

Valdoria, a junior from Cerritos, Calif., posted times of 1:01.76 in the 100 IM and 27.06 in the 50 fly. Hansen also complimented the efforts of sophomore Tabea Mose. The native of Germany went 24.75 in the 50 free and 27.21 in the 50 back while helping the 200 free relay team finish second with a time of 1:46.77.

Tomorrow

The `Runners will return to the pool at the Hillman Aquatic Center on Saturday for Day 2 of CSUB's home meet, known as the Roadrunner Invite. The first race of the day begins at 10 a.m. here in Bakersfield. Admission is free to all fans.
