`Runners Drop Road Match at WAC-Leader Utah Valley



OREM, Utah – The CSU Bakersfield men's soccer team concede a pair of first-half goals to Western Athletic Conference-leading Utah Valley and the Roadrunners were unable to overcome the early deficit. CSUB fell to the host Wolverines 2-0 on a cold night in northern Utah as UVU (7-3-1, 4-0 WAC) remained perfect in league play.

"It was a fair result," said Richie Grant, Head Coach of the `Runners. "We never gave ourselves a chance tonight and lacked both the quality and grit needed to get points away from home. We will have to respond well on Sunday."

The Wolverines opened up a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute of the match. Blake Frischknecht gathered a ball in the far left corner of the box and sent a screamer to the upper right "V" for a beautiful goal that put UVU ahead early on. Just under five minutes before the first half ended, Luis Vargas doubled Utah Valley's lead with a goal of his own.

CSUB was able to keep the UVU offense much quieter in the second half, but the `Runners struggled to get their own attack going. Bakersfield drove deep into UVU's final third in the 78th minute and had a near miss on a shot by Ryan Goldsmith, but the senior forward's volley went just wide.

The `Runners were unable to rally and fell by the eventual score of 2-0 in freezing temperatures. Redshirt sophomore Detre Bell minded the net well for Bakersfield, making a total of four saves on the night.

Bakersfield (3-7, 2-2 WAC) has one WAC road match left on the weekend before the `Runners can come home for a three-match homestand. On Saturday, Oct. 12, CSUB will take on Air Force (3-7, 2-2 WAC) at 12 p.m. (PT) in Colorado.
