Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Collective Team Effort Gives CSUB 67-56 Victory Over CSU

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield women's basketball tallied their second-straight conference win on the road against Chicago State University on Saturday afternoon. The Roadrunners had four players finish in double-figures en route to a 67-56 win and improved 8-11, 4-2 WAC while the Cougars fell 1-16, 1-3 WAC.

"It was a gutsy win by us," said head coach Greg McCall. "Chicago State played extremely well. We knew they would play hard coming out of an emotional win on Thursday. They threw everything they had at us, but we were able to withstand their punches and secure the win."

Bakersfield opened scoring in the first quarter with a driving layup down the middle of the paint from freshman Ashley Austin. Chicago State quickly responded with two points of their own in the lane. Back-to-back steals and a pair of fast break layups would give the Roadrunners a four-point lead before the Cougars went on their own 6-0 run to take the lead. Alexxus Gilbert sunk a mid-range jumper from the elbow to tie the score but multiple shooting fouls followed by a team fifth and sixth foul on the other end allowed CSU to extend their lead to 10 points with less than thirty seconds left in the period. JJ Johnson was able to get to the charity stripe and split her free throws to cut the deficit to nine, 9-18, at the end of the period.

Malayasia McHenry opened the second quarter with a quick triple but Chicago State responded and brought their lead back to nine. Free throws helped the Cougars extend their lead to double-digits, until McHenry's layup in the paint brought it back to single digits. Austin kept the Bakersfield run going with a steal and three-point play and cut the deficit 17-23. Down seven points with under four and a half minutes left in the half the Roadrunners began to chip away at the deficit. CSUB closed the period on an 11-2 run to take a 32-30 lead at the half.

Back-to-back fast break layups from JJ Johnson to start the third quarter then two more in the paint from Vanessa Austin would extend the Roadrunner lead 38-30. The Cougars were in the bonus the remaining five and a half minutes in the third and used it to their advantage. The score was 42-35 with 4:56 left in the quarter before Nia Johnson got her first points of the day out of the media timeout and extended the Bakersfield lead back to nine points. Cougars used free points from the charity stripe again this time tying the game, 46-46, with under thirty seconds to play in the third. Jasmin Dixon regained the Roadrunner lead and gave her team a two-point lead heading into the final period.

"It was a collective team effort all around. From our seniors, all the way down to our freshmen," added McCall. "As we get deeper into league play it's going to important we stay consistent with our energy on the defensive end and that we're able to have everybody contribute on the offensive end."

Gilbert gave the Roadrunners a two-possession lead with a jumper to start the fourth quarter. A triple brought the CSU deficit down to three with under six minutes then within one with just over four and a half minutes to play. Gilbert and McHenry connected on a give-and-go to give the Roadrunners a 56-53 lead. The last four minutes of the game was in favor of the visiting team. Bakersfield outscored their opponent 11-3 in the final minutes and finished the game on top 67-56.

"One thing we needed to have done better was limiting our fouls," explained McCall. "We allowed them to get to the line and they capitalized 27 times. Hats off to Chicago State for played us hard to the very end."

Gilbert led the Roadrunners in scoring for the 13th time this season. She was one-point shy of her eighth 20-plus point game with 19 on the day. Ashley Austin, JJ Johnson and McHenry joined Gilbert in double-digit scoring with 16, 11, and 11, respectively. Vanessa Austin had six points and three blocks, while Johnson added four steals.
