Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

CSUB Ties UNLV, Picks up Road Point

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Entering the weekend, the CSU Bakersfield men's soccer team had been allowing nearly two goals per game.  Using great teamwork, toughness and togetherness, Rodrigo Sarmiento and the Roadrunner defense did not allow a goal in 200 minutes of action, defeating Grand Canyon University 2-0 on Friday night and earning a 0-0 tie against UNLV this afternoon.

"Roy (Rodrigo) did an amazing job stepping up this weekend under challenging conditions," said CSUB head coach Richie Grant.  "We came out of these two games a tougher program and got a hard-earned four points."

The Rebels (6-5-1, 1-1-1 WAC) were picked to finish second in the conference to begin the season, while the Lopes were slotted just above the `Runners (3-6-1, 1-1-1 WAC) in sixth.

The back-to-back shutouts are the first since 2015, when CSUB blanked San Jose State on November 7 and Houston Baptist in the first round of the WAC Tournament on November 12.  Sarmiento made five saves to pick up his second straight clean sheet against the Rebels.

The match was even throughout as both teams had three shots on goal in the first half.  In the second half, CSUB mustered just one shot on goal, while UNLV produced two.  The Rebels held a slight 14-9 edge in total shots, but neither team attempted one in the final overtime.  Niall Owens led the offensive attack with three shots, two of which were on goal.

"We are really looking forward to the Air Force match and all the marketing efforts that have gone into Friday to make it a special day," said Grant.

The `Runners return home next Friday when they host No. 8 Air Force for an 11:00 a.m. kickoff.  CSUB is hosting an 'Education Day' on Friday and over 2,000 local elementary and middle school students will be in attendance.  Limited tickets are still available.  For more information call 661-654-BLUE.
