Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Roadrunners Knock Off No. 7 Air Force on Historic Day

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The inaugural "Education Day" for the CSU Bakersfield men's soccer program will be a day not soon forgotten.  In front of a record 2,298 fans at the Main Soccer Field, the Roadrunners knocked off the highest-ranked opponent in the school's Division I history, defeating No. 7 Air Force 1-0 on a first half goal by Ryan Goldsmith

Goldsmith received a pass from Jacob Alatorre at the top of the box, dribbled towards the opposing goal line and banged the ball off the left post for the game-winning goal in the 17th minute.

Entering today's match, CSUB was 3-16-2 against ranked opponents with the last victory against a ranked team coming against No. 19 UC Riverside on September 23, 2012.  The last home win over a ranked team was against No. 8 UC Santa Barbara on September 1, 2010.  The Gauchos were also the highest-rated team CSUB had ever defeated.

Rodrigo Sarmiento picked up his third consecutive shutout on the day after blanking Grand Canyon and UNLV last weekend.  The reigning Western Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week made seven saves on the day and faced 16 shots against the top offensive team in the league.

The three consecutive shutouts are the first since 2014 when CSUB shutout San Diego State, Howard and Indiana University – Purdue University Fort Wayne in succession.

The Falcons (10-2-0, 3-1-1) had two shots hit posts and held 16-9 edge in shots and a 9-4 advantage in corner kicks, but CSUB produced the only tally on the scoreboard.  Entering the match, Air Force had won 10 straight matches with its only defeat coming in the season opener to Virginia Tech.

CSUB also reset the all-time single-game attendance record as 2,298 fans packed into the Main Soccer Field for today's match.  The inaugural "Education Day" produced over 2,000 fans from local elementary and middle schools.  The previous record of 2,207 was set on November 17, 2011 when CSUB hosted Saint Mary's in the NCAA Tournament.

The Roadrunners (4-6-1, 2-1-1) will remain at home on Sunday when they host Utah Valley University for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff.
