`Runners Earn Road Shutout Win over Grand Canyon

PHOENIX, Ariz. – The CSU Bakersfield men's soccer team evened its Western Athletic Conference record on Friday night at Grand Canyon University as they shut out the Lopes 2-0.

"That was a big-time performance from our program," said CSUB head coach Richie Grant.  "It was a great response to adversity leading into the match and during.  This should help our confidence as we move forward in league play."

Tom Shepherd opened the scoring in the 12th minute as Niklas Koerber corralled a loose ball and made a great pass to the sophomore who beat the GCU keeper one-on-one.  It was Shepherd's third goal of the season, which is tied for the team lead.

The Roadrunner defense bent, but did not break all evening as the Lopes possessed the ball for the majority of the match.  CSUB held GCU without a shot on goal in the first half and `Runner keeper Rodrigo Sarmiento made two saves in the second half to earn his first career clean sheet and his first career victory.

Clinging to a 1-0 lead the `Runners would go a man down as Stephon Marcano picked up his second yellow card of the night in the 61st minute, but Ryan Goldsmith gave the `Runners the commanding 2-0 advantage in the 66th minute when Niall Owens popped the ball back into the box and right to Goldsmith's boot for the second goal of the night.

It was Goldsmith's third goal of the season to tie Shepherd and Francisco Gomez for the team lead.  Owens claimed the team lead with three assists on the play.

GCU outshot CSUB 9-6 and held a 7-3 advantage on corner kicks, but the Roadrunners held the 3-2 advantage in shots on goal.

With the victory, the Roadrunners even their conference mark to 1-1 and boost their overall record to 3-6.  The Lopes also sit at 1-1 in the WAC and dip to 4-5 on the season.  CSUB continues its road trip on Sunday when they take on UNLV at 1:00 p.m.
