Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Roadrunners Can’t Overcome Early Deficit

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield men's soccer team fell behind 2-0 to San Jose State early in the first half on Saturday night at the Main Soccer Field, but closed the gap to 2-1 before half.  However, despite 26 shots on the night and 11 on goal, the Roadrunners couldn't even the score and fell 2-1 in the Western Athletic Conference opener for both teams.

San Jose State (3-4-1) made the most of their opportunities early on, scoring on two of its first three shots.  Omar Lemus played a cross to Eduardo Buenfil in the ninth minute as the Spartans took the early advantage.  Lemus then took a pass from Andy Rios deep in CSUB territory and booted in San Jose State's second goal of the evening in the 13th minute.

Despite the early hole, the Roadrunners (2-6) didn't back down and controlled the play for the rest of the half.  The Roadrunners seemed to get lift when senior captain Jacob Alatorre checked in to the match midway through the first half.  It was Alatorre's first appearance of the season after recovering from a preseason injury.  CSUB finally broke through in the 41st minute as Niall Owens scored his second goal of the season after corralling a rebound from a Francisco Gomez header.

Owens' goal would complete the scoring for the night despite a combined 25 more shots.  Both keepers continued to face an onslaught of shots in the second half with CSUB holding the 14-10 edge in the second frame.  For the match, CSUB held a 26-16 advantage and a 11-7 edge in shots on goal.

The 26 shots on the night are tied for third all-time in CSUB's Division I history.  The last time the `Runners produced 26 shots was way back on Sept. 7, 2014 against Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne.  Tom Shepherd's six shots are tied for ninth in CSUB history.  `Runner legend Gyasi Zardes owns seven of the eight spots ahead of the sophomore.

Rodrigo Sarmiento made five saves in his first career start in the net, while the Spartans' Alex Clewis made nine stops.

The Roadrunners hit the road on Friday when they travel to Grand Canyon for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff.
