CSUB Hangs Tough, Falls to UC Davis

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield men's soccer squad battled hard, but could not overcome a physical UC Davis team on Sunday night, falling 3-1 at the Main Soccer Field.

The Roadrunners (2-2-0) looked as though they would jump ahead in the eighth minute as Niall Owens made a perfect pass to Sebastian Mentel who popped it over the Aggie keeper, but the ball hit the post and the visitors were able to clear it with no harm done.

The Aggies (3-0-1), rated No. 6 in the Far West Region by the United Soccer Coaches, struck twice in the first half to take a 2-0 lead into halftime.  Adam Mickelson scored on a rebound in the 18th minute and Marte Formico took a pass from Mickelson for the second goal.

In the second half, the `Runners and Aggies were even until Brian Quintero made it 3-0 in favor of the visitors in the 84th minute.  Despite the big lead, CSUB never quit as Ricardo Soza redirected a deep Mentel cross to get the home team on the board two minutes later.  It was just the second goal of Soza's young career.

Detre Bell was nearly perfect in the second half as he turned away six UC Davis shots and eight total for the game.  Tristan Lea and Carlos Armendariz made their career debuts and Tanner Knorr saw his first action of the season for CSUB.  The Aggies outshot CSUB 19-3 on the evening.

CSUB will hit the road for the first time on Friday as they head to Oregon State (1-1-1) for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff.
