Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

CSUB Can’t Hang On in Wild One Against Sacramento State

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – There were nine goals, eight cards, 31 shots and over 95 minutes of action on Friday night at the Main Soccer Field on the campus of CSU Bakersfield.  Unfortunately for the Roadrunner men's soccer team, it found itself on the losing end of a 5-4 overtime defeat to Sacramento State

The Hornets (1-1-1) struck quickly, scoring just 25 seconds into the match.  Brad Bumgarner blasted a shot at CSUB keeper Detre Bell, who deflected the ball right to Benji Kikanovic who found the back of the net.

The game took a dramatic turn in the 11th minute as Sam Gomez drilled a shot at the Sacramento State goal and starting keeper Nick Kubler touched the ball with his hands outside the box to receive the first red card of the evening.  Tom Shepherd took the ensuing free kick for CSUB and bent the ball around the Hornet wall, beating Kubler's replacement to tie the score.

Playing with a one-man advantage, Shepherd corralled a loose ball inside the box and drilled home his second goal of the night and his career to give CSUB a 2-1 advantage in the 35th minute.  Just three minutes after halftime it appeared it would be all Roadrunners the rest of the way as Niall Owens found Sebastian Mentel to make it 3-1.

However, the Hornets stormed back, and cut the lead in half as they forced CSUB into an own goal in the 53rd minute off of a corner kick by RJ Moorhouse.  Still taking advantage of the extra man, Francisco Gomez scored for the second straight game and Justin Markus got his first career assist to put CSUB up 4-2 with just over 15 minutes remaining.

Oscar Govea answered to make it 4-3 in favor of the home team and Jack Larter tipped in a free kick by Moorhouse to knot the score with just over five minutes remaining.  CSUB lost its one-man advantage in the 87th minute as Shepherd picked up a red card and the two teams headed to overtime with 10 men each.

Henry Nguyen received his second yellow in the 91st minute on a handball and Kikanovic scored his second goal of the night in the 95th to end the match.

Despite being short-handed for much of the night, Sacramento State outshot the Roadrunners 16-15 and held a slim 9-7 edge on corner kicks.

CSUB will close its four-game homestand on Sunday when they host UC Davis at 7:00 p.m.
