`Runners Drop Series Opener to GCU

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield baseball team couldn't overcome a potent Grand Canyon University offense and lost the series opener to the Lopes 13-4 at Hardt Field.

GCU (26-19, 13-3 WAC) scored in all but two innings on Friday night and scored multiple runs in the first second and third innings as the Lopes built an 11-0 lead after five innings.  CSUB starter Alec Daily (4-2) lasted just two innings and gave up eight runs on just five hits.  Just four of Daily's eight runs were earned as the Roadrunners committed a season-high five errors over the course of the evening.

CSUB (16-28, 6-10) tried to climb back into things as the offense put up two runs in both the six and seventh innings.  With two outs in the sixth, Andrew Penner singled to center and Ryan Koch doubled him home in the next-at bat.  After a Luis Martinez walk, Christian Deaton singled up the middle to score Koch.

In the seventh, Buck Anderson hit an infield single and moved to second on a throwing error by the Lope second baseman.  He moved to third on a base hit by Jake Ortega and beat the third baseman's throw home on a slow roller by Noah Barba

Jake Wong (8-1) picked up the win after he allowed four runs on eight hits in 6.1 innings.  The Lope offense was powered by leadoff hitter Quin Cotton, who led off the game with a triple and finished with three hits and four runs scored.  First baseman Ian Evans contributed five RBI for GCU.

Isaiah Moten and Steven Gee had solid appearances out of the CSUB bullpen.  Moten tossed six innings and gave up just two earned runs, while Gee tossed a scoreless ninth.  Penner and Anderson both had two hits to lead the offense.

The two teams will meet again tomorrow for Game 2 of the three-game set at 6:00 p.m.
