`Runners Close Regular Season with Loss to Chicago State

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield baseball team took an early 3-0 lead, but Chicago State University came back to earn a 6-3 victory at Hardt Field in the regular season finale for both teams.

The Roadrunners (20-34, 10-14) scored three runs in the second inning as Ryan Koch led off the inning with a double and came around to score when Cole Valletta doubled with one out.  Mark Pena singled home Valletta and after Pena was sacrificed to second by Buck Anderson, Daniel Carrizosa ripped a single to right that scored the center fielder for the third run of the inning.

Chicago State scored two unearned runs in the fourth inning against Kevin Altamirano and added three more runs in the fifth and sixth inning combined against Isaiah Moten (0-2).  Isaac Meza came in after Moten and allowed just an unearned run and two hits in 3.1 innings pitched.  Michael Bovee, Jr. needed just one pitch to get the final out of the ninth inning.

The Chicago State bullpen was effective in relief of starter Zach Thomas (3-6).  In four innings, Robert Gutierrez, Edward Kang and Yunis Halim allowed just three hits and a walk.  Halim got the final three outs to pick up his second save of the season.

Valletta tied his career-high with three hits on the day and also tied his career-mark for total bases with four.  Both records were previously set against UC Riverside on March 17 of last season.  Jake Ortega and Sergio Robles both had pinch-hit singles in the ninth to start the inning, but Halim rallied to get three straight outs to end the game.

CSUB will be the No. 6 seed in next week's Western Athletic Conference Tournament.  The `Runners will play No. 3 seed New Mexico State University in the opening round at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday in Mesa, Ariz.
