CSUB Falls in Opening Round of WAC Tournament

MESA, Ariz. – The CSU Bakersfield baseball team had its chances, but couldn't get on the scoreboard against New Mexico State University on Wednesday night at Hohokam Stadium.  Despite outhitting NM State 8-7, the Aggies defeated the Roadrunners 4-0 in the opening round of the Western Athletic Conference Tournament.

CSUB had a baserunner in scoring position in three of the first four innings and a runner on base in all but the third inning, but was unable to do damage against NM State starter Kyle Bradish (8-3).  Bradish, a First Team All-WAC selection, tossed seven shutout innings and allowed just four hits while striking out 10 batters.

The `Runners best chance came in the eighth as Mark Pena and Daniel Carrizosa started the inning with singles.  With two on and nobody out, Jake Ortega struck out and Pena was thrown out trying to steal third and despite hitting it squarely, NM State's Brock Whittlesey got Noah Barba to fly out to center to end the threat.  CSUB also had a pair of two-out singles in the ninth off of Whittlesey, but was unable to break through.

After the Aggies scored twice in the first inning, CSUB starter Alec Daily (5-4) rallied to shutout third-seeded NM State in four of the next five innings.  Facing the top offense in the conference, Daily tossed seven innings, worked around seven hits and four walks to give up just four runs.  The redshirt senior struck out five and tossed 113 pitches.  Kevin Altamirano also tossed a perfect eighth inning for CSUB.

Barba had two hits on the night including a one-out double in the first inning.  Jassen Oliver added a pair of singles and was hit by a pitch as he reached base in three of his four plate appearances.

The Roadrunners (20-35) will play the fifth-seeded University of Northern Colorado tomorrow morning at 11:00 a.m. in the first elimination game of the WAC Tournament.  If CSUB wins, they will play at 11:00 a.m. on Friday morning.   The `Runners will meet the lowest-seeded loser of Game 5 between No. 1 Grand Canyon University and No. 4 Seattle U and Game 4 between No. 2 Sacramento State and No. 3 NM State.
