Seniors Lead Way in Mother’s Day Thriller

GREELEY, Colo. – Senior Naithen Dewsnap tossed 6.2 shutout innings in relief to earn his third victory of the season and classmate Jassen Oliver had three hits, two doubles and the game-winning RBI as the CSU Bakersfield baseball team won the series finale 3-2 against the University of Northern Colorado and reclaimed control of their WAC Tournament hopes.

Neither team's offense had much of anything going as they had been shutout for a combined 11 consecutive innings heading into the final frame.  With one out in the ninth, Evan Berkey walked and stole second and Oliver put the finishing touches on a career day with his second double of the game to knock in the freshman.

Clinging to a one-run lead in the bottom of the inning, Dewsnap recorded his career-high ninth strikeout to start the inning, but allowed a walk to the next batter.  However, the senior right-hander induced a one-hopper back to him to the following batter and turned it into a 1-6-3, game-ending double play.

"It was a big day for our guys today," said CSUB head coach Jeremy Beard.  "We hit a lot of balls hard all game long and didn't get many rewards.  I'm proud of the resiliency this club showed. We hung around long enough and rallied late on Oliver's clutch hit to right field with two strikes."

It was the second-straight game Dewsnap appeared out of the bullpen after spending some time in the weekend rotation.  The senior relieved starter Isaac Meza in the third inning with Northern Colorado already leading 2-1 and with baserunners on first and second base with just one out.  Dewsnap escaped the inning and went the distance for the Roadrunners.

"We pitched the ball very well today," said Beard.  "Snapper was exceptional, coming in and making pitches against an explosive offense."

The Bears (28-22, 11-13 WAC) opened the scoring with a solo home run in the first inning, but CSUB knotted the score in the third as Oliver singled and scored later in the inning on a base hit by Daniel Carrizosa.

The home team answered in the bottom of the third, but CSUB tied it in the fifth with an unearned run.  Mark Pena doubled with two outs and came around to score on an error by the Bear right fielder.

Troy Watson didn't receive a decision despite throwing eight innings, striking out five and allowing just five hits.  Zach Heath (1-1) took the loss for the Bears after recording just one out and allowing the walk to Berkey.

Oliver's three hits tied a career-high from earlier this season and his two doubles set a new career mark.

CSUB hits the road on Tuesday as they make the trip to UC Santa Barbara for a 3:00 p.m. first pitch.  The Roadrunners will return home next weekend for a three-game series with Chicago State University beginning on Thursday.

WAC Tournament Watch
CSUB's victory over Northern Colorado, coupled with the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley's loss to Chicago State has allowed the `Runners to regain control of their postseason destiny.  CSUB now leads UTRGV by a full game in the WAC standings, while also leading Utah Valley University and Chicago State by two.  Northern Colorado has clinched a spot in the WAC Tournament with the other four teams duking it out for the sixth and final position.  UTRGV hosts NM State next weekend and Utah Valley travels to Sacramento State.
