Baseball Falls in Game 2 at Northern Colorado

GREELEY, Colo. – The CSU Bakersfield baseball team lost 4-2 on Saturday in Game 2 of a three-game Western Athletic Conference series to the University of Northern Colorado.

The Roadrunners (17-32, 7-13 WAC) matched the Bears with eight hits apiece, but Northern Colorado hit two solo home runs, which proved to be the difference in the game.  Starting his first game since April 8 against New Mexico State University, freshman Davonte Butler (2-7) had one of the best starts of his young career.  Butler tossed seven innings, the second-longest outing of his career, and scattered eight hits, while striking out six batters and allowing all four runs.

In his return to the bullpen, Naithen Dewsnap entered the game in the bottom of the eighth with no outs and a runner on second and got out of the inning unscathed.

Keenan Lum (3-2) picked up the win after tossing the first seven innings and allowing two runs.  The Bear bullpen was perfect in the eighth and ninth innings to keep CSUB off the scoreboard.  Just one of CSUB's eight hits came after the fifth inning.

CSUB got on the board in the first as Noah Barba drew a one-out walk and Andrew Penner moved him to third on a single to right field.  Ryan Koch hit a groundball to second base that allowed Barba to come home.  The Bears matched the run in the bottom of the inning and took a 2-1 lead on a solo homer in the second.

The `Runners evened it up in the fourth as Evan Berkey ripped a single to left field and Sergio Robles followed with a double to score him.  Just as they did in the first inning, Northern Colorado answered with a run in the bottom half to retake a 3-2 lead and extended it to 4-2 on a solo shot in the sixth.

CSUB had a chance to get closer in the fifth as Jake Ortega and Barba singled to start the inning, but Penner grounded into a double play and Koch grounded out to shortstop.

Penner had two more hits to lead the `Runner offense, while Barba singled and walked.

The `Runners and Bears will meet again tomorrow at Jackson Field for the series finale at 12:00 p.m. MT.

WAC Tournament Watch
Earlier today, the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley defeated Chicago State University 8-4.  The Vaqueros and the `Runners are now tied for the sixth and final spot in the WAC Tournament.  UTRGV holds the tiebreaker between the two clubs as they won the season series 2-1.  Northern Colorado leads both teams by 2.5 games for the fifth spot in the standings.  UTRGV and CSUB lead Utah Valley University by 1.5 games after the Wolverines lost Game 1 of a doubleheader to Seattle U.  Chicago State is still two games behind CSUB.
