`Runners Can’t Hang on in Series Opener

GREELEY, Colo. – The CSU Bakersfield baseball team led 4-1 after four innings on Friday afternoon, but the University of Northern Colorado exploded for seven unanswered runs in the middle innings to earn a 9-5 victory in the series opener.

Jake Ortega got CSUB (17-31, 7-12 WAC) going in the first inning as he led off the game with a single and scored on a wild pitch with two outs.  After the Bears knotted the score in the bottom half, the Roadrunners took a 3-1 lead as Andrew Penner knocked in Daniel Carrizosa on a sacrifice fly and Ryan Koch singled to score Ortega.  In the fourth, Sergio Robles blasted his second home run of the season to push the lead to 4-1.

The middle innings were tough on the visitors as they had baserunners on first and second with nobody out in the fifth, the bases loaded with nobody out in the sixth and men on second and third with one out in the seventh and failed to score in each inning.  Meanwhile, the home team scored one in the fifth and three in the sixth and seventh innings to take an 8-4 lead.

The Roadrunners cut into the 8-4 advantage in the eighth, as Evan Berkey scored on an error on an Ortega ground ball, but that was as close as they would come.  Northern Colorado matched the solo tally in the bottom of the inning to complete the scoring at 9-5.

CSUB starter Alec Daily (4-3) lasted 6.2 innings and struck out eight batters, but allowed eight runs and 12 hits.  Justin Mulvaney (2-1) picked up the win after tossing three scoreless innings in relief.

Offensively, the `Runners produced 13 hits.  Koch led the way with three hits, a double and a RBI.  Ortega, Berkey, Robles and Carrizosa all had two safeties with Ortega scoring a pair of runs from the leadoff spot.

The two teams will meet again tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. (MT) at Jackson Field.

WAC Tournament Watch
The Roadrunners now trail the Bears by 1.5 games for the fifth position in the Western Athletic Conference standings.  The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley lost 5-4 today to Chicago State University, so CSUB still leads the Vaqueros by a full game for the sixth and final tournament spot.  CSUB also leads Utah Valley University by 1.5 games and Chicago State by two.
