CSUB Can’t Overcome Early Deficit, Falls to NM State

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield baseball team spotted New Mexico State University a four-run advantage on Friday night, and despite scoring three runs in the seventh inning, couldn't complete the comeback against the Aggies and dropped the series opener 9-3.

Alec Daily (2-1) kept the `Runners (10-18, 1-3 WAC) within striking distance in his third start of the season.  The senior allowed a run in the second inning and an unearned run crossed the plate in the fourth.  Daily left the game after he walked the leadoff man in the seventh and committed a fielding error on a sacrifice bunt attempt.  Kyle King relieved him and allowed his two inherited runners to score.

With the Aggies (17-13, 4-3 WAC) leading 4-0 in the seventh, the CSUB bats finally woke up against NM State starter Kyle Bradish (4-1) and company.  Bradish didn't allow a hit until the fifth inning and stranded six runners in scoring position over the first five innings.  Mark Pena led off the inning with a single, stole second and moved to third on a throwing error by the Aggie catcher.  Daniel Carrizosa followed with a RBI single to get the `Runners on the scoreboard and chase Bradish.  After Austyn Tengan hit into a fielder's choice, Jake Ortega walked and Andrew Penner singled to load the bases.  Ryan Koch followed with a run-scoring base on balls and Evan Berkey hit a sacrifice fly to center field to pull the `Runners within one.

However, the visitors responded in a big way in the eighth.  With one out, NM State had two singles and a double off of King to make the score 5-3.  After a strikeout by King, Joey Ortiz hit a three-run home run to left field to put the game out of reach.

Penner and Pena both had two hits to lead the offense, while Koch, Berkey and Carrizosa all collected RBI.  Daily was saddled with the loss despite allow just two earned runs in six innings pitched.

The second game of the three-game series is set for 6:00 p.m. tomorrow at Hardt Field.
