CSUB Can’t Hold Late Lead against Sacramento State

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield baseball team took a 6-5 lead with four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, but Sacramento State responded with three runs of their own in the top of the eighth to earn an 8-6 victory over the Roadrunners at Hardt Field.

Trailing 5-2 in the seventh, the `Runners (15-23, 5-7 WAC) batted around to take a one-run lead.  Daniel Carrizosa got things going with a base hit bunt and moved to second on a single by Jake OrtegaAndrew Penner followed with another single that scored Carrizosa and cut the Hornet edge to 5-3.  With two outs, Luis Martinez walked to load the bases and pinch-hitter Noah Barba also walked to score Ortega.  The next batter, Sergio Robles, was hit by a pitch to score another run and Christian Deaton chopped an infield single to the third baseman to put CSUB out in front.

However, the visitors (21-17, 9-3 WAC) weren't finished and scored three times in the eighth to reclaim an 8-6 lead.  The big blow was a two-run double down the left field line by Ian Dawkins that put the Hornets out in front by a pair.

CSUB went down in an early 3-0 hole, but Robles singled to center field to plate Martinez and Jassen Oliver, cutting the advantage to 3-2 after four innings.  The `Runners outhit the Hornets 12-10, but left 10 men on base including seven in scoring position.

The `Runners squandered a solid start by freshman Elijah Parks.  Parks tossed six innings and recorded a career-high eight strikeouts.  It was a rocky beginning for the freshman as he allowed three runs in the first three inning, but he settled in and allowed just two hits and stuck out four batters the rest of the way.  Fellow freshman Davonte Butler (1-6) took the loss after allowing three runs on three hits in an inning pitched.  Kyle King also allowed a run over the final two innings.

Martinez, Robles and Carrizosa all had two hits to lead the offense.  Seven of CSUB's nine hitters had a base hit, while Martinez also scored twice.
Dawkins led the Hornets with two doubles, three hits, three RBI and two runs scored.  Austin Ragsdale earned the victory despite allowing a walk, hitting a batter and allowing a base hit in the seventh.  He recorded just one out.  Tanner Dalton chucked a perfect ninth to earn his sixth save.

???????CSUB heads to Loyola Marymount University on Tuesday for a 6:00 p.m. first pitch.
