Baseball Shuts Out No. 23 UNLV

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – For the second time this season, a nationally-ranked team has made a road trip to Hardt Field, and for the second time this season the CSU Bakersfield baseball team has pulled off the upset.  Behind a number of outstanding pitching performances and a pair of clutch hits by Austyn Tengan, the Roadrunners beat No. 23 UNLV on Tuesday night, 4-0.

The Rebels (11-2) entered this evening ranked No. 23 by the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and were ranked No. 17 in the RPI.  Earlier this season, the `Runners knocked off No. 22 Saint Mary's College in a 3-2 comeback win.  It was the first shutout of the season for CSUB and the first shutout since the `Runners blanked the University of North Colorado on May 5, 2017.

After losing seven of its first nine games to start the season, the Roadrunners (6-8) took three out of four in last weekend's series at the University of Portland and seem to have found their groove with the upset this evening.

"I think there's no question momentum is a big part of this game," said head coach Jeremy Beard.  "Early on, when we have 14 freshman and multiple JC transfers it's tough to find your identity.  We were thrown in the fire and   that's what we want.  These guys came here to play the best and we're not afraid to play the best.  What that means is that we have to learn from mistakes and losses and continue to grind and get back up and get better."

Isaiah Moten made his first start of 2018 and he did not disappoint.  The junior tossed four scoreless innings and worked around six hits, a walk, and a `Runner throwing error to help blank a Rebel attack that was averaging over eight runs per game and ranked sixth nationally in home runs.

In the second inning, Moten allowed three hits and overcame an error by the Roadrunner defense.  With two outs in the inning, UNLV's Grant Robbins laid down a base hit bunt that was thrown away by the CSUB defense and allowed him to move to second.  The next batter laced a single up the middle, but Mark Pena came up firing from his center field position to nail Robbins at the plate and keep the score tied at zero.

Alec Daily had another impressive relief outing as he took the ball from Moten and tossed three straight scoreless innings.  Daily struck out five batters before giving way to weekend starter Ben Cutting.  Cutting chucked a perfect eighth inning and Naithen Dewsnap struck out the side in the ninth to complete the shutout.

"The pitchers did an outstanding job of hitting the mitt and locating, and our defense was able to get into movement and action today and that really was the difference in the ballgame," said Beard.  "Having Alec Daily changes our whole pitching staff with a veteran presence and he is a huge part of our program."

In his first start of the season, Tengan was put in some big situations at the plate, and the sophomore came through twice when his number was called.

With runners at the corners in the second inning, Tengan lined a single to right field that scored Evan Berkey to give the `Runners an early 1-0 lead.

"I was just looking for a pitch to hit and he threw a changeup and I hit it," said Tengan.  "It feels great to be back out there with my brothers and get the 'W' today."

Later in the game, the sophomore shortstop came up with two outs and men at first and second and smoked a double down the right field line that plated Jassen Oliver and Jake Ortega to give the `Runners a commanding 4-0 lead.

The addition of Tengan will certainly see dividends beyond just this evening's victory according to Beard.

"With Tengan back today, it obviously adds a huge spark to our lineup and adds a lot to how we run our offense," said the skipper.

Tengan, Andrew Penner and Jassen Oliver all had two hits to power the CSUB attack and Daily (1-0) picked up the win in relief.  Penner has now reached base safely in 13 consecutive games.

CSUB will be tested once again this weekend.  The `Runners will head to the College of Charleston for a three-game series beginning Friday at 6:00 p.m. EST.  The Cougars (10-2) are coming off a weekend sweep of the University of Georgia.
