Baseball Drops Series Finale to UTRGV

EDINBURG, Texas – After tying the game with two runs in the seventh inning, the CSU Bakersfield baseball team was unable to complete the comeback and dropped the series finale to the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, 6-5.

The Roadrunners (10-15, 1-2 WAC) were never able to claim a lead on Sunday, but were able to rally and tie the score on two separate occasions.  Some two-out magic in the seventh by CSUB knotted the score at five.  Buck Anderson singled to the shortstop and Mark Pena blasted a double to deep left center field to knock him in.  Alec Daily followed with a pinch-hit RBI single and advanced all the way to third on an error by the Vaquero left fielder.  After a walk to Austyn Tengan, Sergio Robles struck out to end the rally.

The `Runners went scoreless in the eighth and Coleman Grubbs hit the game-winning home run in the bottom half off of closer Naithen Dewsnap (1-2).  It was the only hit Dewsnap allowed in 2 2/3 innings and he had struck out three straight batters before allowing the big fly.

CSUB threatened in the ninth as Ortega was hit by the first pitch of the inning.  He stole second as Anderson struck out and moved to third on a groundout by Pena.  With two outs and the winning run at third, Daily grounded out to second base to end the game.

The Vaqueros (15-10, 2-1 WAC) took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning, but CSUB answered with a run in the top half of the second on a RBI single by Jake Ortega.  UTRGV matched the `Runners' solo tally in the bottom of the inning and added two more in the third to chase starter Aaron Charles

Kyle King was solid once again out of the bullpen to keep CSUB close.  King entered the game with a runner on third and one out in the third and got back-to-back strikeouts to strand the runner.  King tossed 2 2/3 innings and struck out four, while allow just one run in the bottom of the sixth.

Kevin Altamarino relieved King with the bases loaded and nobody out in the sixth.  He allowed a single to his first batter, but got a popup to Tengan before handing the ball to Dewsnap.  Dewsnap got a fly out to right and a groundout to shortstop to end the inning and keep CSUB within two runs.

Ortega, Pena, Carrizosa and Daily all had RBI base hits, while Tengan also knocked in a runner.  Despite going 0-for-3, Andrew Penner increased his reached base safely streak to 24 games with a walk in the eighth inning.

The `Runners will head to CSUN on Tuesday for a non-conference affair with the Matadors at 2:00 p.m.  CSUB will be out for revenge as they fell to CSUN at Hardt Field earlier this season.
