Baseball Drops Non-Conference Game to CSUN

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield baseball team scored five runs in the first three innings at CSUN on Tuesday afternoon, but were unable to keep pace with a powerful Matador lineup and fell 13-7 at Matador Field.

CSUB (10-16, 1-1 WAC) got off to a great start as Austyn Tengan led off the game with a walk and came around to score as Andrew Penner grounded into a double play.  The Matadors scored twice in the opening frame, but Tengan doubled in Mark Pena and Christian Deaton in the second to put CSUB back in front 3-2.  After the Matadors reclaimed a 6-3 lead in the bottom of the inning, Alec Daily drove in Penner and Deaton doubled in Ryan Koch as the Roadrunners pulled to within 6-5.

CSUN (10-14) scored two more times in the bottom of the third and added three more in the sixth to take a commanding 11-6 advantage.  The Matador lineup, which is one of the nation's leaders in slugging percentage and home runs, hit two long balls on Tuesday.  Joey Cooper led off the game for CSUN with a round tripper to right center and Brandon Bohning hit a three-run shot in the sixth.

Despite scoring in five of the first seven innings, the `Runners could've had even more.  CSUB grounded into three double plays and had two baserunners thrown out at home plate in the second inning.

Koch and Deaton both had two hits to lead the offensive attack, while Daily and Tengan both knocked in a pair of runs.  Penner was on base three times on Tuesday via a hit, a walk and a hit by pitch to extend his reach base safely streak to 25 games.  Penner also scored twice on the day.

Isaiah Moten (0-1) was saddled with loss as he lasted just one inning and allowed five runs on four hits.  Kevin Altamarino had a career-long 3.1 inning outing as he took the ball from Moten.  Kyle King continued to throw well for the `Runners as he pitched a perfect seventh inning.

CSUB will take the week off before heading to Cal Poly next Tuesday for a 6:00 p.m. first pitch.
