Softball Splits Day One Of The Gaucho Classic II

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield's softball team split day one of the two-day Gaucho Classic II. The `Runners earned a come-from-behind 10-6 win over host UC Santa Barbara, but fell 7-3 to West Coast Conference foe Saint Mary's.

Game 1

UCSB jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning after a two-RBI homerun and a forced run off a walk. Julea Cavazos recorded a two-RBI single to center field that cut the `Runners deficit 3-2. The Gauchos responded in the bottom of the second with a three-RBI homerun to extend their lead 6-2.

The fourth inning and tenacious defense would prove to be the game-changer for Bakersfield. Cydney Curran opened the seven-run inning with a RBI triple, followed by Cavazos' left field RBI single to bring in Curran and cut the lead 6-4. Jocelyn Betancourt stepped to the plate and bombed a three-RBI homerun to lift the `Runners 7-6. The squad extended their lead to 9-6 with Gabrielle Fua's two-RBI single to right center field.

Curran recorded her second RBI of the game in the top of the sixth off a single through the right side for the final 10-6 score. Cavazos was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate and recorded a team-high three RBI.

Game 2

In the second game, the `Runners trailed 5-0 through the first two and a half innings but found a spark in the bottom of the third and cut the deficit 5-3. Kaylynn Burt scored first on an unearned run. Gabrielle Fua was next with a RBI single that brought Halle Neher to home plate. An error by third base allowed Ariana Acedo to advance and score for the `Runners third and final run of the game. A two-RBI single from the Gaels shortstop brought the final score to 7-3.

Tomorrow, the Roadrunners (3-22) will face UC Santa Barbara and Saint Mary's, respectively. First pitch against UCSB is scheduled for 9 a.m., while the CSUB-SMC rematch is slated for 11:15 a.m.
