CSUB Falls to UTRGV in Second Game of Series

Edinburg, Texas – The CSU Bakersfield baseball team fell behind early and couldn't mount a comeback against the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley as they dropped Game 2 of the three-game series to the Vaqueros, 5-0.

CSUB (10-14, 1-1 WAC) was unable to solve Vaquero (14-10, 1-1 WAC) starter Jorge Flores (3-1).  The redshirt senior tossed eight innings and struck out six, while scattering six hits.  Ryan Jackson tossed the ninth for UTRGV and allowed a base hit.

The Roadrunners hit into three double plays over the course of the game to kill any potential rallies.   CSUB's best opportunity to score came in the second inning as Ryan Koch worked a one-out walk and Sergio Robles hit a chopper on the infield that stayed fair on the third base line.  Jassen Oliver moved both runners a base with a groundout to second, but Mark Pena struck out to end the threat.

CSUB would not have multiple runners on base for the rest of the game.

Davonte Butler (1-4) was saddled with the loss, despite giving up just two earned runs in 5.1 innings pitched.  The freshman gave up four hits and a walk and struck out a batter.  Jordan Ragan came in to relieve Butler in the sixth and pitched two scoreless innings and allowed just one hit and a walk, while striking out two.

Koch was 2-for-2 with a walk to lead the CSUB offense.  Andrew Penner also recorded a pair of base hits to extend his streak of reaching base safely to 24 games.

CSUB looks to win the road series tomorrow as first pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. CST at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.  The `Runners will hand the ball to opening-day starter Aaron Charles (2-3), while the Vaqueros will look to Trevelle Hill (3-1).
