`Runners Fall to CSUN in Non-Conference Action

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield baseball team returned to Hardt Field on Tuesday evening, but couldn't overcome the chilly weather or the Matadors as the Roadrunners fell 8-1 to CSUN.
`
Runner starter Kyle King struck out the side in the first inning, but ran into some trouble in the second inning and allowed the Matadors to take an early, 2-0 lead.  CSUN added three more runs off of King in third inning before he was relieved by Elijah Parks.  King struck out six in 2 1/3 innings.

"I thought the pitching was pretty good besides a couple of pitches tonight," said CSUB head coach Jeremy Beard. "I thought they did well against a very offensive team."

Those couple of pitches most certainly were served to Nolan Bumstead.  The senior hit a three-run home run to chase King and victimized Parks in the fifth with a two-run shot.

Alec Daily was a bright spot for the CSUB pitching staff as he made his season debut on the mound.  Daily tossed two scoreless innings in his first action on the bump since 2015 after battling arm injuries.

"It was great," said Beard on his performance.  "He did a really nice job.  He went out there and attacked the zone with authority and had a nice mound presence to him out there.  We're really excited about getting Dailes back as part of this pitching staff."

The `Runner lineup threatened to get on the scoreboard in the fourth inning, as Noah Barba walked and Andrew Penner followed with a single, but the home team couldn't capitalize.  A similar scenario played out in the sixth inning as Barba and Penner both reached base with nobody out.  Both were in scoring position with two away, but Mark Pena grounded out to the pitcher to end the threat. Penner was the only `Runner to record multiple hits in the game.

CSUB got on the board in the seventh as Evan Berkey singled to start the inning and hustled all the way to third on a two-out infield single by Daniel CarrizosaJake Ortega came through with the base hit to left to plate the `Runners' only run.  With the single, Berkey extended his reached base safely streak to nine games to start his career.

Cassius Hamm picked up the win for CSUN after throwing a perfect third inning.  The Matadors used eight different pitchers with only starter Matt Acosta tossing more than one inning.

"We need to go up to Portland and keep getting better," said Beard.  "We've been battling through three or four very mature opponents, so far.  We're a younger club and as long as these guys continue to get better, keep grinding it out and being more of who we are, I think we will be fine down the road."

The `Runners look to snap their five-game losing streak on Thursday when they travel to the University of Portland for the first game of a four-game series with the Pilots.  First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
