CSUB Starts WAC Championships With Record-Breaking Swim

Houston, Texas -- CSU Bakersfield men's and women's swimming and diving teams finished the first day of the Western Athletic Conference Championships with some great highlights. The men's 200 medley relay team reset the Roadrunner record while two women's relay times made the CSUB Top 5 all-time lists.

Men

CSUB's Head Coach, Chris Hansen, highlighted some of the first day's swims: "Tonight was a great first night for freshman Kris Rogic. His lead off time in the 800 free relay was his best time, and his 50 free split in the 200 medley relay was one of our fastest in a long time. Our other swimmers, Kramer, Chir, and Gillilan all had really fast splits in the 200 medley relay helping break the school record."

In the evening finals, men broke the school record with a time of 1:28.88, a record that the Roadrunners had not touched since 2013. Justice Kramer led off the backstroke leg with a split of 22.87, Jake Chir kept the pace in the breaststroke going 24.56, Loren Gillilan posted an impressive time of 21.74 in the butterfly, and Rogic brought the `Runners home with a split of 19.71. If Rogic's performance was done from a flat start, it would have made him CSUB's record holder in the 50 freestyle.

The 800 freestyle relay time (6:33.48) was just shy of making CSUB's all-time Top 5. CSUB also saw strong swims from Rogic, Lovre Soric, Joe Cobarrubias, and Owen van Krimpen. A native of Croatia, Rogic also had another breakout swim going 1:37.70 in the relay, earning himself an NCAA 200 free B cut.

In the morning's first diving session, freshmen Adam Estrella and Andrew Huerta finished 13th and 15th, respectively in the 3-meter diving prelims. Both men improved their results in the consolation finals as Estrella finish 12th with a six-dive score of 234.85 and Huerta was one place back with a 200.80 points.

Women

On the women's side, Hansen commended the `Runners, saying, "Jayssie started the night off with two of her best times. Her lead off in the 800 free set her up for a great meet, and Maddie also had some really amazing splits." Hansen went on to praise Tatum Collatz:" Tatum swam her best 50 back tonight leading off the medley relay."

During the night's finals, the `Runner women posted times good enough for fourth all-time for CSUB in both the 200 medley and 800 free relays. Collatz came through with a great start in the medley, leading off with a time of 26.27, to help Jayssie Haynes, Morgan King, and Alisa Cooke land a time of 1:43.25.

Both Maddie Cosgrove and Haynes swam strong legs in the 800 free relay; Cosgrove posted a time of 1:50.04 and Haynes came in at 1:50.18. With Gabi Liedy as the second leg and Cooke swimming third, the group of four girls worked together to place fourth overall in the event.

In Wednesday morning's diving prelims, junior Hannah Chernabaeff finished 19th with a score of 211.00 on the 1-meter board. Senior Donna Rotella came in two spots behind her teammate with 173.35 points.

Head Coach Hansen wrapped up the first day of swimming and diving action, saying, "Both the men and women were off in diving, but I expect them to do much better as the weekend progresses. Overall, I can't wait to see how everyone performs."
