Mark Penyacsek Leads `Runners at Reno

RENO, Nev. – In his first action since the Roadrunner Open, CSU Bakersfield redshirt junior wrestler Mark Penyacsek went 5-2 on Thursday at the Reno Tournament of Champions to lead the `Runner contingent.

Penyacsek began the day with a loss to Michigan State's Nick May 4-1, but following the opening round loss, the redshirt junior rattled off five straight victories defeating Umpqua Community College's Brayden Schultz, Simpson University's Jacob Gonsalves, Oregon State's Adam Retab, Arizona State's Chad Porter and Southern Oregon's Tanner Fischer in succession.  He finally ran out of gas in the consolation semifinals, battling Fresno State's

Wrestling unattached a trio of freshman had strong showings for the Roadrunners.  At 133 pounds, Chance Rich won his first two bouts to advance to the quarterfinals before dropping his final two matches.  He began the day with an 11-1 major victory over Oklahoma State's Andrew Nieman and followed it with a last-second victory over The Citadel's Charle Kearney.  Rich scored an escape to break a 3-3 tie to earn the win.

Angelo Martinoni joined Rich in the championship quarterfinals, using some last-second magic of his own.  The freshman escaped Steven Abbate's control with 28 seconds left to defeat him 4-3 in his opening match, and scored a 12-3 major decision over Lorenzo Diego De La Cruz in the Round of 16.  In the quarterfinals, he was defeated by technical fall by top-seeded and returning All-American Kaid Brock of Oklahoma State and his late magic ran out against American's Jack Mutchnik despite a reversal with just over a minute remaining.

Noah Blakley-Beanes also had success at 141 pounds.  After an opening-round loss to Old Dominion's Sa'derian Perry, he racked up victories over Clackamas's Nathan Johnson, Menlo's Sebastian Marin, and a dominating 17-0 technical fall over American's James Giaccia.  His day ended with a 5-0 loss to California Baptist's Zander Silva.

Albert Urias continued the strong showing by the young `Runners at 165 pounds.  Urias had a tough opening-round draw and was pinned by top-seeded and 10th-ranked Chandler Rogers of Oklahoma State in 1:47, but the young freshman hung tough and won three straight matches before bowing out of the consolation bracket.  Urias knocked off Pacific's Kaleb Winebarger 10-9, before earning a victory over Zechariah Bresser by disqualification and pinning Kyle Snelling in the first period (2:06).

Kalani Tonge and Joseph Valdez both went .500 at 2-2 on the day at 149 pounds as did Reed South at 174.

CSUB will hit the mat again on January 1-2 when they head to Chattanooga, Tenn. for the Southern Scuffle.
