CSUB Knocks off Kent State, Falls to Pair of Nationally-Ranked Foes

KENT, Ohio – Facing some of the top competition in the Midwest, the CSU Bakersfield wrestling squad started off the day with a thrilling 17-16 victory over the Golden Flashes of Kent State at the Frenzy at the Field House.  The Roadrunners were defeated by No. 3 Iowa 36-3 and No. 18 Wisconsin 28-12 in the final two duals of the evening.  The highlight of the day individually was Russell Rohlfing's upset of Iowa's Pat Lugo who was ranked sixth in the country at the 149-pound weight class.

CSUB 17, Kent State 16
Trailing 16-14 in the team standings heading into the heavyweight bout, CSUB's Jacob Sieder scored a 7-2 decision over the Golden Flashes Billy Bolia to clinch the 17-16 victory for the Roadrunners, their first win over Division I competition this season.  Sieder came out of the gates hot, scoring a takedown and a two-point nearfall in the first period.  He made it 5-0 with a second period escape and led 5-2 after Bolia takedown later in the period.  Bolia chose neutral to start the third period and Sieder effectively ended the match with his second takedown later in the final frame.

Sean Nickell evened the score at 3-3 in the second match of the dual with a 3-0 shutout, earning a penalty point, a third period escape and a point for riding time.  CSUB really got cooking in the middle weights as Rohlfing scored a 14-6 major decision with four takedowns in the third period against Kody Komara.  Wyatt Gerl followed with a 9-0 major decision over Richard Jackson and Jacob Thalin picked up a win by sudden victory at 165.  Mark Penyacsek battled hard and nearly knocked off No. 2-ranked Kyle Conel at 197 pounds, but came up just one point short.

No. 3 Iowa 36, CSUB 3
A powerful Hawkeye lineup that featured seven nationally-ranked wrestlers was too much for CSUB to overcome in the `Runners' second dual of the day.

Rohlfing's thrilling upset of Lugo was capped by a takedown with five seconds remaining to give the redshirt junior CSUB's lone victory of the dual.  Lugo scored two takedowns in the first period to earn his four points, but Rohlfing escaped on both occasions and finished the period with a takedown of his own to knot the score after the first three minutes.  Rohlfing started down in the second period, which allowed Lugo to rack up 1:25 in riding time, but the La Habra Heights, Calif. native escaped to go up 5-4 heading into the final frame.

Starting down to begin the third period, Lugo a two-time NCAA qualifier at Edinboro University quickly escaped to tie the score, but Rohlfing answered with a takedown for a 7-5 lead.  Lugo escaped after just nine seconds and scored another takedown to take an 8-7 lead with 53 second left.  Rohlfing escaped Lugo's grasp again with 15 seconds left to tie the score and needed just 10 seconds to get the winning takedown and earn the 10-9 victory.

No. 18 Wisconsin 28, CSUB 12
Gerl and Penyacsek continued to be impressive in the final dual of the day for CSUB.  Gerl improved to 3-1 in his first season in blue and gold with an 8-7 decision over Patrick Spray.  Spray scored the first points of the match with a takedown with 30 seconds remaining in the first period, but Gerl quickly reversed it to tie the score just before the buzzer.  Spray made it 4-2 with another takedown in the second period, but Gerl escaped to earn a point.  Starting on bottom to begin the final period, Gerl reversed his position to grab a 5-4 advantage.  After another reversal by Spray, Gerl escaped and took down the redshirt sophomore with 15 seconds left to win the match.

Penyacsek nearly scored a first period pin in his third match of the day, but Andrew Salemme was saved by the bell, a call that held up after CSUB head coach Manny Rivera wanted the officials to take a second look.  Instead, Penyacsek was awarded a four-point nearfall and a 6-2 lead.  The redshirt junior scored the only point of the second period on an escape and took down Spray in the third period to end all doubt.

CSUB's Carlos Herrera nearly had a victory over Wisconsin's Tristan Moran, who is ranked No. 13 in the country, but the Badger escaped to tie the match 6-6 in the closing seconds.  After a scoreless first minute of overtime, Herrera escaped to take a 7-6 lead, but Moran's takedown sealed an 8-7 victory.
