CSUB Starts off Season with Pair of Huge Wins

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield wrestling team started off the season with a bang on Thursday night at the Icardo Center, dominating San Francisco State 38-3 and Life Pacific 38-6. 

"It was a great first night for us," said CSUB head coach Manny Rivera.  "We were able to get some kinks out and get better tonight.  Tonight was huge for us because we have such a big next weekend."

Alex Hernandez-Figueroa and Sean Nickell won twice for the `Runners in dominating fashion.  Hernandez-Figueroa earned two major decisions to kick off his season, defeating SF State's Angelo Reyes 15-6 and Life Pacific's Nate Yanez 14-3. 

Nickel, ranked No. 12 in the country by Wrestling Insider Magazine and Trackwrestling, didn't disappoint in the season debut, pinning Jordan Gurrola of SF State and earning an 18-3 technical fall against Anthony Vargas of Life Pacific. 

Ranked nationally in the 141-pound class to start the season, Russell Rohlfing earned a 13-6 decision against Isiah Alva of SF State in his first career match at 149.  Dominic Ducharme aided the effort against the Gators, pinning Justin Pichedwatana in the second period. 

Joining Nickell with technical falls against Life Pacific were Kalani Tonge, Josh Annis, Jacob Thalin and Reed South.  Tonge picked up a 17-1 win in 6:53, while Annis didn't even see the third period as he won 16-1 in 4:38.  The victory by technical fall was the first of Tonge's and Annis' careers.  Thalin needed just two periods to dispatch Connor Hayes 17-2 and Reed South finished off the Warriors with a 19-2 victory in 6:01. 

Next weekend, the Roadrunners will have four difficult duals.  On Friday at Kent State, CSUB will clash with the Golden Flashes, who are receiving votes in the National Wrestling Coaches Association Poll to start the season.  The `Runners will then tussle with No. 3 Iowa and No. 19 Wisconsin.  On Saturday, CSUB will conclude the road trip with a dual at Pittsburgh, who is also receiving votes in the poll.
