Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

`Runners Stopped by Utah Valley

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Coming off of a historic victory on Friday against No. 7 Air Force, the CSU Bakersfield men's soccer team couldn't keep the momentum going as they fell 2-1 to Utah Valley at the Main Soccer Field on Sunday.

Things were clicking for CSUB early as Niklas Koerber gave the Roadrunners (4-7-1, 2-2-1) the early 1-0 advantage.  Defender Kendall Burks brought the ball up the left side and passed it to Tom Shepherd who crossed the ball to Koerber right in front of the net for his first goal of the season.  It was also Burks first career assist.

It seemed that CSUB would head to the locker room with a 1-0 advantage, but Utah Valley knotted the score with just 29 seconds left in the first half.  Samuel Krommenhoek started the play with a long throw in, which was headed by Caleb Wight directly to Alec Felix and Felix headed the ball directly into the net.

The game remained 1-1 until the 81st minute, when Leo Fuchs combined with Luis Garza for a pretty give and go right in front of the CSUB net and Fuchs blasted the ball past Rodrigo Sarmiento for the game-winner.  Sarmiento made three saves in the defeat, while the `Runners forced Utah Valley keeper Joseph Wheelwright to make five stops to earn the victory.

The loss snapped a three-game unbeaten and shutout streak for CSUB as they blanked Grand Canyon, UNLV and Air Force in succession.

Statistically the game was very even with CSUB holding an 8-7 edge in shots and a 6-5 advantage in shots on goal.  The Roadrunners were however unable to take advantage of 13 corner kicks, the most they've had in a match since Nov. 14, 2013 against Kansas City.

CSUB remains in the thick of the Western Athletic Conference Tournament race and will head to No. 25 Seattle U on Saturday for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff.
