Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

`Runners Fall in San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The CSU Bakersfield men's soccer team was unable to come away points in the Western Athletic Conference standings as it ran into a hot offense from the University of the Incarnate Word and lost 3-1 on Sunday afternoon.

The Cardinals (2-11-1, 2-6-0) put together a strong opening half as they built a 2-0 lead after the first 45 minutes.  Luis Garza headed in a corner kick in the 19th minute to open the scoring and Jonathan Diaz pushed the lead to two when he scored in the 44th.  Incarnate Word placed seven of its 10 shots on goal, while CSUB forced Cardinal keeper Carlos Mercado to make two saves.

The `Runners (4-10-1, 2-5-1) came out of the locker room inspired for the second half as Ryan Goldsmith wasted little time to get CSUB back in striking distance.  Goldsmith blasted his team-leading fifth goal of the season past Mercado to cut the Cardinal lead in half in the 49th minute.

The Cardinals thwarted the CSUB comeback attempt as Darius Feldman found the back of the net to increase the home team's lead to 3-1.

The `Runners fired nine shots in the second half and held a slim 16-14 edge on the day, but Incarnate Word was more accurate with 11 of those 14 being on the net.  CSUB had just six shots on goal.  Both teams had seven corner kicks each.

CSUB keeper Rodrigo Sarmiento made eight saves in the defeat.

The `Runners return home next weekend when they host Houston Baptist on Friday at 7:00 p.m. and Kansas City on Sunday at 6:00 p.m.
