CSUB Drops Match to Houston Baptist

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield men's soccer team's postseason chances took a dramatic hit on Friday night as they lost to Houston Baptist 3-1 on Friday night at the Main Soccer Field.

CSUB (4-11-1, 2-6-1 WAC) will need Grand Canyon to lose both of its remaining games and have Houston Baptist finish winless in its final two games, while the Roadrunners will need to beat Kansas City on Sunday night and California Baptist next Saturday night to earn a spot in the Western Athletic Conference Tournament.

Tonight, the Huskies jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute as Dominick Faletto headed in a corner kick Darrell Johnson.  The Roadrunners answered back quickly as Ricardo Soza unleashed a strike past Houston Baptist keeper Jorge Cabrera for his second goal of the season.

It appeared that the two teams would head to halftime tied at one, but Daan Snellink corralled a loose ball in the box after a Husky corner kick and put the ball into the back of the net.  The visitors stayed on the offensive all evening as they took 23 shots as a team.  Gianluca Natera scored his fifth goal of the season in the 70th minute to give Houston Baptist a 3-1 edge and put the game out of reach.

The Roadrunners had their chances as they took 17 shots on the evening, but could only place seven of them on the net.  CSUB also tied a season-high with 13 corner kicks.  Jeremie Charron set a career-high with five shots, many of which came off of those corners.

Detre Bell made a season-high nine saves on the evening in his first action since suffering a broken arm against Cal Poly back on September 15.

The `Runners will remain at home on Sunday when they host Kansas City on Sunday at 6:00 p.m.
