`Runners Fall To Fresno State

FRESNO, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield's volleyball team had its four-game win streak snapped on Tuesday night in a road match against Fresno State. The Roadrunners fell 3-0 in the Save Mart Center against the Bulldogs.

The `Runners jumped out to a 12-8 lead, capped off by an ace by senior Fabiana Andrade. After Fresno State's timeout, the Bulldogs charged back to take a 21-19 and force a CSUB timeout. Four straight `Runner errors helped Fresno State take a 25-20, first-set victory despite five kills from junior Mattison DeGarmo.

In the second set, CSUB led 18-13, but the Bulldogs won eight of the final nine points of the set to take a 25-21 victory. Junior transfer Briannah Mariner converted on four kills for the `Runners, but CSUB still found itself trailing two sets to none.

Fresno State climbed to a 12-7 lead in the third set, forcing a CSUB timeout, before surging ahead 17-9. The Bulldogs held strong to the end and earned a 3-0 match victory with a 25-13 win. Fresno State's Taylor Slover, the team's leader in kills coming into the match, paced the Bulldogs with 13 on Tuesday evening.

DeGarmo and Mariner led the `Runners with seven kills each in the match while the latter posted a team-best .273 hitting percentage. Senior Aleksandra Djordjevic added six kills, eight digs, and one assist. Senior Emily Lopes recorded 23 digs in Fresno.

The `Runners (4-3) will hit the road again this weekend for their third tournament of the season. CSUB will head to Flagstaff, Ariz. to compete against Arizona State, Utah State, and host Northern Arizona, Sept. 8-9.
