`Runners Drop Pair Of Matches To Open NAU Tournament

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The Roadrunner volleyball team opened the NAU Tournament on Friday with a pair of close matches. CSU Bakersfield fell against Arizona State before coming up short against Utah State in the nightcap.

"We need to be more consistent and focus a little bit more," said Giovana Melo, Director of Volleyball at CSUB. "We lose focus at the end of the sets and we can't close it."

Arizona State 3, CSUB 0

The `Runners and Sun Devils started out the match neck and neck. Leading 12-11, ASU rattled off 3-straight to go ahead 15-11 and force CSUB's second timeout. The run continued as the Sun Devils extended their lead out to 18-11. The `Runners struggled to get their offense going and eventually fell 25-17 in the set while hitting -.053 in the game.

The second set continued in the way of the Sun Devils as ASU jumped out to a quick, 10-3 lead. The `Runners fought back as the two teams traded points to get to 20-12. Despite four kills from junior Mattison DeGarmo, CSUB fell 25-18 as ASU took a 2-0 lead in the match.

ASU's Oluoma Okaro went on a six-serve run including three aces to put her team ahead 10-5 in the third set. Trailing 15-9, the `Runners went on a 4-0 run to force an ASU timeout. CSUB pushed the score all the way to a tie at 20-20, but the Sun Devils closed the set and the match with a 25-21 victory.

The `Runners were led by redshirt seniors Haylee Roberts and Sydney Haynes, who tallied eight and seven kills, respectively, while the latter hit for a .462 clip. Senior Fabiana Andrade recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 24 assists and 11 digs against ASU.

Utah State 3, CSUB 0

Despite five kills each from both freshman Desireé Sukhov and junior Briannah Mariner, the `Runners fell in a tight Set 1 to Utah State, 25-23. The Aggies surged ahead to a 19-13 lead, breaking a close game open for the first time. CSUB fought back and used a six-point run to cut the deficit to just one point at 23-22, but the USU held on for the first-set win.

The `Runners held the lead for the majority of Set 2, but could never pull more than just a few points away from the Aggies. Tied at 18-18, CSUB won the next two points, but the Aggies went on a 7-2 run to take the second set, 25-22. Haynes, a native of Vancouver, Wash. led the `Runners with six kills and four blocks in the set.

In the third and final set, the Aggies jumped out to a 15-9 lead. The `Runners pushed back, closing in at 22-18, but USU won the final three points to take the 25-18 set victory and a 3-0 match win. Sukhov and Mariner each contributed three kills in the set while senior Aleksandra Djordjevic had five digs en route to 11 in the match.

Mariner led all `Runners with 11 kills while adding six blocks. Sukhov recorded nine kills and nine digs while Andrade had 18 more assists in the second match. Haynes added eight kills and seven blocks while senior Emily Lopes had 16 digs. Redshirt sophomore Sidney Wicks chipped in for 14 assists against the Aggies.

The `Runners (4-5) will wrap up the NAU Tournament on Saturday with a match against the host, Northern Arizona. CSUB's match against the Lumberjacks is scheduled for a 12 p.m. start in Flagstaff.
