`Runners Blow The Competition Away In The Windy City

CHICAGO, Ill. – Despite Chicago State's intimidating record of 9-6, the CSU Bakersfield volleyball team came out stronger Thursday night as the Roadrunners played four sets against the Cougars. The two teams traded the first two sets before the `Runners took the 3-1 victory by winning the last two sets.

"I am happy we were able to come out of difficult situations through the game and get the win," said Giovana Melo, CSUB's Director of Volleyball. Although, the `Runners won Thursday night's match, Coach Melo wants the team to keep working on improving the consistency of each set: "We were still very inconsistent. We missed a lot of serves."

The opening set proved to be no walk in the park for the `Runners as the Cougars gained a six-point advantage from 14-11 to lead 14-17. However, the momentum swung back and CSUB closed the gap twice at 17-17 and 24-24. This led to a Bakersfield first set win 27-25. Redshirt senior Haley Roberts led the `Runners with four kills and senior Fabiana Andrade had eight assists.

Set 2 started out with Chicago State taking their biggest lead at 6-15 before a Bakersfield timeout. CSUB battled back to try and close the gap at 13-16 but the Cougars maintained the lead and finished off by taking Set 2, 25-23.

Coming out on fire, CSUB cruised to a third-set win, 25-17. The `Runners never let the Cougars see them sweat as they maintained the lead the entire game. After a score of 10-8, Andrade served eight straight points and CSUB won 10 of 12 points to lead 20-10. Freshman Desiree Sukhov's five kills in the set helped the `Runners dominate and earn a 2-1 lead.

The fourth was tighter as Chicago State tried to force a fifth set. At a 10-6 score, CSUB sprinted ahead to 19-13 and finished off by trading blows to a 25-20 set win and 3-1 match victory. Senior Aleksandra Djordjevic posted five kills and five digs in the final set while junior Briannah Mariner chipped in four kills.

The `Runners were led by Sukhov's season-high 13 kills and Robert's 12 kills on Thursday. Andrade led in assists (27) while Sidney Wicks chipped in for 21 assists. Senior Emily Lopes finished the night with 28 digs while Mariner added nine kills. Djordjevic had seven kills and 16 digs in the match.

CSUB (7-8) will continue their WAC league road match on Saturday in Kansas City at 1 p.m (CT). The `Runners will go up against UMKC, who are now 5-9 after taking a home win Thursday. `Runner fans will be able to watch a live stream of the match via the WAC Digital Network.
