CSU Bakersfield Sweeps UMKC, 3-0

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Consistency is all it took for CSU Bakersfield's volleyball team to sweep UMKC 3-0 Saturday afternoon. The Roadrunners were determined to never let the Kangaroos take the lead today and finish their first pair of league matches on the road for a 2-0 Western Athletic Conference record.

"That was the most consistent we have been all season," said Giovana Melo, CSUB's Director of Volleyball. Being pleased with the overall results with the `Runners today, Melo admired their attention to every detail, "We were very patient in every aspect."

The opening set was dominated by the `Runners, who took an early lead before the first timeout at 12-7. The Kangaroo's came near to closing the gap, trailing by 2 at 19-17 but Bakersfield took no prisoners and gained six points to take the first set at 25-18.  Redshirt senior Sydney Haynes led the `Runners with five kills followed by middle blocker Haley Roberts with four kills. Senior Fabiana Andrade led the way in the first set with eight assists.

In Set 2, outside hitter Briannah Mariner took a left-handed kill down the middle to keep the `Runners drive going to open the lead at 10-8. CSUB continued to take command throughout the set taking their biggest lead at 19-13. UMKC managed to gain six points to come close at 20-19 but it wasn't enough to cut the lead from Bakersfield. Mariner closed the second set at 25-22.

CSUB came out on fire dominating the third set early at 14-8. The only time the `Roos came close was trailing the `Runners by four points at 14-10. Bakersfield could not be tamed taking the match point with a combination play from Mariner and Roberts to seal the victory at 25-14.

The `Runners were led by Haynes' 11 kills and Mariner's 12 kills on Saturday. For the first time this season Bakersfield had two double-doubles, Andrade and redshirt sophomore Sidney Wicks both had 11 digs and 20 assists. Senior Emily Lopes finished the night with 19 digs while Roberts and DeGarmo added eight kills.

CSUB will travel back home to host Seattle U on Thursday, Sept. 28 and Utah Valley on Saturday, Sept. 30 at the Icardo Center. Come on out and watch your `Runners play another pair of league matches next week. For those who cannot make it out, live stats and live stream can be found at the CSUB volleyball schedule page.
