CSUB Takes Pair Of Victories In South Dakota

BROOKINGS, S.D. – Top-notch serves and passes helped the CSU Bakersfield volleyball team earn a pair of victories on Friday to open South Dakota State's tournament. The Roadrunners defeated Valparaiso 3-1 in the morning before taking down host SDSU 3-2 in the nightcap.

"I saw a lot of great things out there today," said Giovana Melo, Director of Volleyball at CSUB. "We are still very far away from where we need to be, but these kids are fighters. We are getting better every day, but to me, it was all about our serving and passing today."

CSUB 3, Valparaiso 1

The `Runners played well enough to win in the first set, but CSUB let five set points slip away and wound up dropping the opening game to SDSU, 29-27. Redshirt senior Haylee Roberts led CSUB in the set with five kills while Desireé Sukhov and Briannah Mariner added four each.

Set 2 went the way of the `Runners as Roberts came down with another five kills. CSUB took the game 25-23 and never looked back. The `Runners went on to win the third set 25-18 with senior Emily Lopes recording 10 digs. CSUB closed out the match with a Set 4 victory, 25-22, with Roberts earning six kills for the second-straight set.

A transfer from Hawai'i Hilo, Roberts recorded 22 kills (.559 hitting percentage) in the match, tying  for ninth-most in CSUB Division I history in a four-set match. Fellow senior Fabiana Andrade recorded a season-high 35 assists in the match while Lopes wound up with 32 digs. Redshirt senior Sydney Haynes chipped in with seven kills and four blocks against the Crusaders.

CSUB 3, South Dakota State 2

The `Runners battled host SDSU in a tight match from start to finish. Bakersfield won the first set 25-22 behind Sukhov's five kills. The Jackrabbits stormed back for a 25-18 win in the second set, but four kills each from Sukhov and senior Aleksandra Djordjevic helped the `Runners take Set 3, 25-18.

SDSU earned a 25-22 Set 4 victory, forcing a fifth and final set in which CSUB jumped out to an early 6-2 lead. A block by Mariner and Haynes then put the `Runners ahead 8-4. After going up 12-7, redshirt sophomore Sidney Wicks served up an ace before junior Mattison DeGarmo put down back-to-back kills to send CSUB back to the hotel with a pair of victories on Friday.

Sukhov and DeGarmo led the `Runners with 12 kills each in the second match of the day while Roberts was close behind with 11. Sukhov added 14 digs Friday evening for her first double-double as a `Runner. Haynes had nine kills in the match while Djordjevic and Mariner each had eight in a well-rounded offensive attack. Wicks dished out 26 assists in the match to complement 22 from Andrade.

The `Runners (3-2) will close SDSU's tournament on Saturday with one final match. CSUB is set to take on Northern Arizona with first serve scheduled for 11 a.m. (PT) in Brookings, S.D.
