`Runners Complete Sweep At SDSU Tournament

BROOKINGS, S.D. – With a pair of wins on Friday, the CSU Bakersfield volleyball team set itself up for a potential sweep at the Hampton Inn Jackrabbits Invitational and the Roadrunners delivered with a third and final victory on Saturday. CSUB dropped a tight first set against Northern Arizona, but the `Runners rebounded to take a 3-1 win over the Lumberjacks and a 3-0 sweep on the weekend.

"This will definitely give us the momentum we need to go into a busy week," said Giovana Melo, Director of Volleyball at CSUB. "It gives us some more confidence as well. We played much more consistent today. I am very proud of the team this weekend."

NAU stole a tight, first-set victory over CSUB, 25-21. Redshirt senior Haylee Roberts led the way for CSUB with four kills while senior Emily Lopes added 14 digs, but the `Runners were unable to claim the set point. In Set 2, a well-rounded attack helped CSUB storm back for a 25-17 victory to tie the match at 1-1. Freshman Krista Hernandez served the final six points while recording three aces in that span.

CSUB got out to another quick start in Set 3, forcing the Lumberjacks to call a timeout at 10-5. The NAU pep talk did not slow the `Runner momentum as CSUB extended its lead to 18-8. The Lumberjacks fought back, but the `Runner defense limited the NAU offense to a .027 hitting percentage in Set 2 and .065 in the third set to take a 2-1 advantage.

In the fourth set, Hernandez went on another six-serve run to help CSUB earn a 10-6 lead. The `Runners then pushed their advantage to as many as eight points (20-12). On the final point of the match, redshirt sophomore Sidney Wicks registered her 23rd assist as Briannah Mariner's 10th kill sealed the victory. CSUB took the final set 25-17 en route to a 3-1 victory over the Lumberjacks.

Roberts, a native of Bakersfield, led all student-athletes with 15 kills while redshirt senior Sydney Haynes added 13. Senior Fabiana Andrade chipped in 24 assists for the `Runners to go with seven digs. Senior Emily Lopes continued to hold down the back line, totaling 39 digs on Saturday. Hernandez finished the match with five aces and nine digs.

The `Runners (4-2) will be busy next week. After returning to Bakersfield, CSUB will take a day trip to play Fresno State on Tuesday, Sept. 5, before hitting the road for Arizona the next day. The `Runners will compete in Northern Arizona's Tournament, Sept. 8-9, with three more matches. CSUB will face off against Arizona State before rematches with Utah State and NAU.
