Sacramento State Evens Series With CSUB 11-1

Box Score

SACRAMENTO, Calif.—CSU Bakersfield used a multi-run inning to take Friday night's opener against Sacramento State. The Hornets returned the favor Saturday night as Sacramento State posted multi-run innings on four different occasions on their way to an 11-1 victory.

With CSUB leading 1-0, James Outman doubled down the right field line on Andrew Hansen's first pitch of the fourth. Vinny Esposito's triple plated Outman to tie the game. Kody Reynolds singled up the middle to drive in Esposito to give the Hornets the lead. Hansen got the next two outs before giving up a PJ Floyd single which allowed Reynolds to score. Trent Goodrich grounded out to Hansen for the final out.

Esposito and Reynolds recorded RBI's on a triple and a double respectively, with two outs in the fifth. Esposito smacked a two-run home run in the seventh. The Hornets scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth. Sacramento State invoked the WAC mercy rule when Brandon Hunley doubled with the bases loaded and two outs in the eighth.

Reynolds was 4-for-4 with two RBI's. Esposito was 3-for-4 with four RBI's. Sergio Robles was 2-for-2 and was hit by a pitch. He is 5-for-5 for the series at the plate and has reached base in each of his seven plate appearances. Mahlik Jones went 2-for-3 for the Roadrunners.

David Metzgar's single in the top of the first tied Mylz Jones' (2013) school record for consecutive games with at least one hit at 21. The single also tied Jeremy Rodriguez's (2010) school mark for consecutive on-base streak at 35.

"We got what we deserved tonight," said CSUB interim head coach Jeremy Beard. "We were outplayed in all aspects of the game and the outcome was what it was for a reason. We need to flush this one and move onto tomorrow. I expect our guys to compete at a higher level in game three."

The Hornets broke CSUB's five-game WAC winning streak to tie the series Saturday night. Saturday's game marked the first time since CSUB joined the league in 2013 that the 'Runners were victims of the WAC mercy rule (148 games). The Roadrunners (21-17, 7-7 WAC) and the Hornets (22-21, 7-10 WAC) conclude their series Sunday. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
