Barnes and Airington Highlight All-WAC Honors

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.- Head men's basketball coach Rod Barnes was once again named 'Don Haskins Western Athletic Conference Coach of the Year' and Jaylin Airington secured first-team all-conference honors to highlight CSUB's presence on the All-WAC teams announced Tuesday by the Western Athletic Conference.

Barnes, who led the Roadrunners to their first WAC regular-season championship and a number-one seed at this week's WAC Tournament, was named 'Coach of the Year' for the second-straight season. In his sixth season he guided the Roadrunners to a 21-8 regular-season record and a 12-2 mark in conference play. He also coached the conference's best defense which during its 14 WAC games, CSU Bakersfield only allowed its opponent to score more than 65 points three times, holding WAC opponents under 50 points twice and under 60 points six times. CSUB leads the league in scoring defense, field goal percentage defense, blocks and steals.

Airington capped his senior season with First Team All-WAC honors for the first time in his career. He leads the Roadrunners offensively with 15 points per game and is also considered the best defender in the WAC, oftentimes tasked with defending an opponent's best player. Airington was also named to the WAC All-Defensive team for his efforts. He averaged 14 points and five rebounds in conference games this season.

Airington is the fourth Roadrunner all-time to be named First Team All-WAC, he was a second team selection in 2015-16 and an all-tournament selection last season as well.

CSUB received a pair of Second Team All- WAC honors for Dedrick Basile and Matt Smith. Basile averaged 12 points per game this season while dishing out 92 assists. He also shot 45% from the field and averaged 11 points, four rebounds and shot 46% in WAC games. Smith, also received Second Team All-WAC recognition, he averaged 11 points and led the team in rebounding with six per contest. Smith was also second on the team in blocks with 26 and led the team in field goal percentage shooting 55% this season.

As the aforementioned CSUB defense dominated the WAC this season, CSUB received three spots on the All-Defensive team. Joining Airington was junior center Moataz Aly, who in his first season with the Roadrunners grew to be a force in the post, blocking a league second-best 43 shots in 25 games. Matt Smith rounded out the defensive team for CSUB with his 26 blocks this season and 24 steals. He had 17 blocks in WAC games and averaged seven rebounds per contest in conference games.

On the All-Newcomer Team, CSUB secured a pair of sports for Moataz Aly and Shon Briggs. Aly's defensive ability and shot-blocking numbers earned his place on this list while Briggs, a junior transfer in 2016-17, earned his spot with solid conference play, coming on strong in WAC games to average six points and four rebounds while shooting 51% from the field. Briggs' first year in the WAC was punctuated with 20 points on 6-6 from the field and 8-11 from the free-throw line on Feb. 23 vs. UMKC. Briggs scored in double figures seven times this season.

The Roadrunners are the top-seed in the WAC Tournament this week at The Orleans Arena in Las Vegas. They will play the winner of the Seattle-Utah Valley game on Friday, March 10 at 6 P.M.
